Can I just clear something up. String algae as you call it is not algae it is blanket weed. Barley extracts and other similar things do not do anything for algae aka green water they target blanket weed and use up the nutrients that it grow on.

It's not that great for removal of blanket weed either more as a proactive approach to stopping it growing.

If you want no UV as stated above the best solution is plants, if you want plants that remove blanket weed then you need water hyacinth, and lots of them.

1) Ok, so green water is NOT string algae
2) Barley extract will NOT clear up green water

I am correct so far?

Like shelbyzman, UV is really not a good option for me. I've had the pond running for 1.5 months now. It doesn't seem like it wants to clear up. I'd say it gets a fair amount of shade although the sun does get it.

Will water hyacinth clear up green water?

It certainly can't hurt. Any plants that take nutrients out of the water, plus provide some shade will only help your cause.

Hyacinths are your friend.

Place them close to the flow, they like a lot of water movement and to be a little cramped.

The simple answer is no but it will help but not cure the problem.

1. Green water is not string algae, string algae is blanket weed
2. Barley extract will not cure green water

I'm confused why you can add a uv, they can be added anywhere in the system(after the bio chamber). Mount them vertically if necessary.

Uv does not kill green water(algae), it makes it clump together so the it's big enough for your filters to take it out.

For string algae the best cure is blanket answer although it can lead to problems down the road, treat at 1/2 recommend dose.

Sorry, but I don't get where BB comes into it, UV light does not kill green algae, it makes it form into clumps so your filter can remove it, your thinking of a uv sterilizer ?

Yeah i meant sterilizer, and yes BB will take care of the algea/greenwater if used correctly.

oHh yeah +1 on shade it helps alot

I have a pool pond. The 'filter' it came with shorted out. I don't have a filter in it right now. just a water fountain pump(underwater).

My wife doesn't care much for fish and doesn't understand why it cost money to operate a pond. So in order to get and run a UV, I'd have to also buy some kind of outside filter(watertight for the rain) . Seems that would push me over $200 for the two for a $40 pool pond

No you wouldn't, just plumb a UV into your pump...
