I have posted in the past about the purchase i made of two aligator gar. Well, yesterday was the time to put the gar into the big tank with the other fishes, including a silver aro about 22'' big. The aligator is now at 12''. So, when i put the gar inside the big tank, for some reason the aro seemed to frighten a bit. The gar started to swim around and see who is who in the tank. When he came closer to the silver aro, the fish (silver) started to jump and swim like hell to get out of the tank, it turned around gave the gar a bite and went to the other side of the tank!!! The gar started to swim to the other side too, like he wanted to find the aro! Is there anything goes with the two fishes in the wild? I'm afraid perhaps the aro could harm the gar, the aro of course cannot eat him because he is too big to swallow him but maybe while the aro is afraid him, maybe could harm him in the proccess of going away from him. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

They don't naturally occur together in the wild....Alligator Gars live in North America only, and no Aro species is from here. Alligator Gars are the most aggressive of all the Gars and something like that isn't surprising imo.

yeah seriously. expect ur silver to dissapear for sure in the future. gator gars get freakin huge. i have my 22"+ silver with 3 12" gars. 2 spotted an 1 shortnose n they all get along fine. my gars are less agressive i guess. my silver jus cruises around with them surrounding him.

How big do shortnose gars get?

In the wild just under 3 feet, in the home aquarium most likely around 2 feet. In a pond they could possibly get closer to their maximum wild size.

don't you know anything by now? because the are known to eat anything! dosen't matter how old or how big your gar is. Your gar will outgrow and, out live your arrowana. that is why your arrow is scared of it, it is due to it's agressive behavior your gar has the ability to chew that aroww. of yours in half.

i would separate the two or get rid of one because in my experience i had a 12 arowana and a six inch gator gar and within two months the gator gar was as big or bigger than the arowana and tried to eat the arowana even though it was obvious that it couldnt. it just ruined the arowanas skin especially on the face and the fins so sooner or later your gonna have to decide which one you want more.

i have a 27"silver and a 23"gator together and they are great together, every once in a while the silver will get it a love peck but never any harm. could it be that your tank is too small?

I think the problem is tank size. If your silver aro is already that big(22"), he must not be afraid of the 12" alligator. I had my 26" silver arowana and my 2 24" alligator gars all together in a pond and they're great, no aggression whatsoever.
