what would be the easiest to breed for a beginer

Well guppies will breed no matter what as long as you have males and females. But alot of the time you will never even see the fry because the parents eat them.

So I would suggest convict cichlids. They are egg layers and 99% of the time the parents will not eat the fry. They are good parents and even feed the fry by spitting chewed up flakes onto the fry cloudmost of the time.
Just do a general internet search on male convict cichlid and then female convict cichlid to learn how to spot the difference in sexes. And then put 1 male and 1 female in a 10-20g tank by them selves and wait. It will happen. Starting with bigger fish helps alot, 2" or more for the parents will net good results.

You should not have any problems crossing the breeds from fancy to regular. I have even breed guppies with gambusia (mosquito fish) and endlers. With no problems.

Awesome, thanks man! Great write-up btw ;)

thanks alot

Thanks alot

I am glad this is helping a few people out.

Thanks for the information. I just started with mollies and guppies as both a potential source of feeders and as an inexepensive experiment to learn about fish breeding and fry care. After I have done what I can with livebearers I will probably switch to convicts to learn about breeding egg layers and cichlids.

I have a spare 60 gallon. Can I have multiple pair of convicts in there? Will they all breed?

Nice write up. Provides some good insight. I had problems with my male and female convicts getting along. Turns out that dithers were needed to lower the level of harrassment.

When having mutiple pairs the problem starts when 1 pair gets eggs or fry they will protect them and fight to the death with the others.

The very best way to do this is to add 2 dividers and make it 3 comparments around 20g each and you could have 3 pairs with little to know problems.

Or if you only want 2 pair then just add one divider.

I did this same thing with a 55g. I divided it up into 3 comparments and had 3 pairs of parents going at once. About the only advice I can give is to have a bare bottom. Cause it makes getting the fry out alot easier when the time comes. Other then that a multiple parent tank is straight forward.

good luck and happy breeding

Fantastic this is exactly what I did my self. I would have stayed with the live bearers if the parents didn't eat most of my fry.:irked:

If you find a way to get past that they are the perfect feeder IMO.
