All DIY stand builders please read

It's not my design, it's based on Uaru Joey's design. I added a few more braces
His design is very adaptable like that. 2x4, 2x6, 4x4, whatever you require for your specific aquarium dimensions. Go check out his YouTube videos, you'll see :)Aloha.

Dude your stand is indistructable lol.I will check his channel out. I like your disign. To be honest like one of the old posts said ill trust 2x4s more then sheets of plywood. Even though his look nice I've seen bad things happen to wet plywood. My local PETCO had a 55 tank and stand collapse cause it got wet. That stand and his are built the same way.

if somethings going to be built, it might as well be overbuild lol. Im sure the plywood method is legit, im no civil engineer so I cant really comment one way or another. My old 100g glass tank had a plywood stand like the OP mentioned and it was really tough. For DIY though I cant cut straight enough so I just went all out with 2.4s and 4x4s. Its really heavy but I had the wood lying around so it was the best bet for me

I'll use plywood to wrap my stand which will add a substantial amount of structural integrity to the strength of it. Of course I think plywood is good material to use when added as part of a system more so than a means to an end. To just dismiss 2x4 as a undesirable and unstable product to use seems so closed minded. I've so much to learn still.:)

By the few pics I seen (I get bad service on my phone) it looks to be he just uses plywood . I could be wrong though like I said I couldn't see all the pics. I sure wouldn't mind framing a 2x4 or 4x4 stand with plywood. I'm sure it would definitely make it stronger but the cost of a all plywood stand compared to a 2x4 stand is a big difference. For $200 I could have a pro carpenter build a stand or buy one. I only paid $40 for all the wood to build my 117 stand.

I'd definitely rather go a bit overboard building a tank stand, then build something just sturdy enough.

You can avoid water soaking into the 2x4's if you simply stain coat them, the water won't soak it will just run down the side, then you have to wipe it up... They use Pine 2x4's to build houses for a reason, you know :p

When I was buying the wood at home depot and asked the employee who happened to be a fish keeper also. He told me the same thing use pine wood stain it with out doors decking stainer.

You can park your car on most well built homemade stands using 2 X 4's and 2 X 6's. LOL! I have homemade stands that are over 30 years old, and they show no signs of warping, sagging, rotting etc.

Here is a tank I got for free today, It sat on one of those "overbuilt" home made stands. It was 2x6 and 4x4 and it worked great until the back glass seperated and 220 gallons hit the floor.

You fellas keep building them out of pine lumber and I'll be ready to collect the pieces when they bust open. This is the second tank this month I've seen break on a home made stand but to each his own.broken 220.jpg
