Problem is, I didn't realize it until well over a week after I'd bought these fish or they would have been returned. In my eyes Uro's are garbage compared to Festae. When I entered this store (mind you, this store is supposed to be one of the most highly rated stores in southeast Michigan) the guy I was with asked if they had any Festae. We were led to a tank with said fish and told they were indeed Festae. I was in there a little over a week later and noticed they had more. I made a comment that it was weird seeing Festae in a store. There was a different guy working that said they weren't Festae, they were Uro's. As I said, I wont be returning to that store to buy anything and I'm keeping my current stock. I know what I have and I'm happy with them. As for the Uro's, as soon as they're big enough to do something with, I'm ditching them. Hell, I barely take care of them compared to my other fish. I've even contemplated just feeding them to my Flowerhorn. Understand, I've had a couple bad experiences buying fish from supposed reputable stores around here and it's soured me on buying fish period and almost caused me to give up the hobby. But I've decided to keep what I have and not add to it. If anything, I'll unload some of my stock at some point.

It's starting to sound like you're not all that much into the hobby anyway if you're ready to throw in the towel over a couple of 'wrong fish' purchases. When you said the first guy led you to a tank and sold you suppossed Festae and a week later different guy said, no they're Uro's....then apparently only one guy didn't know what he was talking about, and now you're putting down the whole 'reputable' store. Just don't get advice from that one guy any more and do your own research too. If the store is so reputable, go to the owner and tell him what's going on, see if he'll make it right with the Uro situation. Do you think a small business owner can afford to lose customers? Not in this economy.

Question, I've seen some beautiful festae on here but how come their is such a desparity in patern and color some are blue some are yellow some are red and some have patterns and others don't, why?

Are they different strains or at different ages? I gues I'm trying to discern how to guarentee a blue/green, or a red/yellow one, heck I'd like to have all of them since they all look great. Just very confused by the differencee in color.

I skipped over a lot of this thread, I'm sure a lot of you have some beautiful fish. It's hard for me to look at these fish and not get even more bummed out about being misled on the fish I was intending to buy. Because of this incident, I no longer even seek these fish. Just going to stick with my current stock and tank. Again, to those that have these fish, enjoy them... probably one of the most beautiful fish kept.
The fact is they are not that hard to find anymore, at least from sources that ship. Some members here have posted quite a few pictures of their breeding Fesate with fry. You can find members that are willing to sell and ship Festae to you. You can always check their threads to see pics of the parents. I purchased mine from a member. Locally, they can be a pain to get sometimes. I know how you feel. I bought a few Uros before I wised up. A local store ordered some for me and when I came in to get them I knew they were not Festae but Uros. The owner looked confused until I explained it to him. I had to actually print out pictures and info on Festae for him to see the difference. One of his suppliers breeds Mayans and sells them as "Red Terrors" which some unscrupulous farms here in Florida consider as Festae also. It was a learning experience for us both. He later got in Festae from another source. Don't neglect your Mayans because they are not Festae. They deserve a good life too. Post them in the classifieds and give them away for free. Someone will probably take them off your hands. Some grow to be quite nice.

That's the thing, this particular store has 2 owners, 1 of them was the one that misled us. They boast to be 15+ year hobbyists. I think they know the difference between Festae and Uro's. I'm not "throwing in the towel". I plan to keep the stock I've got. I have no intentions of buying another fish. My reason for getting rid of my FH is I just do not have the room for the bigger tank as originally intended for him right now.

I feed them, I clean their water... I just don't care about them. At this point, I really don't care. I wont be purchasing new fish. I'm content and happy with my fish, I don't know if you saw the new tank thread I posted. If not, I've got pics of my current stock and those are the only fish I want now.

Some of it has to do with lighting and the actual photo or vid. Also males have no pattern when not breeding and are kinda green looking...when they are breeding is when they have the bars and when mine turns real yellow. Even during that time the color shifts slightly depending on mood. Also females colors get more intense when breeding. Also genetics...

I also got some Mayans that were sold as RT at a LPS I dont blame them though because they rarely ever get RT at LPS and most pet stores cant tell the diff if they do, the fact is I was the one who was uneducated at the time, I still have one of the Uro's the one that looked the best and he is a beautiful fish.

I look at mine and just get sad. The only fish in the tank they're in I give a crap about is my HRP x Convict female. She's gorgeous and I hope to breed her with a male Cutteri x Convict to make my own unique fish. Other than those. I understand I was more at fault than they were. But if someones been in the hobby as long as these guys, that leads me to believe they're shady and I'm not gonna deal with shady people. My current stock with the exception of my EBJD have all come from the same store. All healthy, nice quality fish and I've gotten them all for next to nothing. I started with 6 BGJD's for 10 bucks, added the EBJD at 4"s for 35 and the 3 blue Texas I got for trading in baby guppies and a couple other fish. I also traded in my Convicts, Cutteri and HRP for my Jag. I paid 10 dollars for these Mayan's. Which I will probably sell the one for 10-15 when it's big enough. Like I said, I'll take care of em, I just don't care about them. I wont neglect them and let them die.

Dude, you have got to let this Festae Fiasco go. I have seen you on several threads talking about how upset you are about this. It has been several weeks since this happened to you, right? You say that you are done with buying new fish but the lack of a Festae clearly has wounded you. I'm not flaming you. I understand how you feel. I just don't think that you will be truly happy with this hobby until you have your Festae. Man, if I had Festae fry I would send you ten for free just so you can move past this. Everybody gets burned sometimes in this hobby, whether intentionally or purely accidentally. Try to make a deal with some members for fry. Make trades or just ask them if they would give you one or two. If they read your threads they will probably help you out. You just seem so deeply hurt about the transaction that left you with your Mayans. I hope a member with festae fry reads this and has enough sympathy for you to send you at least one Festae fry to get you started. You need some closure, my friend. It's becoming too much.

Honestly, I'm over it now. Seeing all these threads rehashed how it made me feel. I'm ok with not having any Festae now. The more I look at my current stock, the more I enjoy them. Especially in their new tank. All Festae would do is kill them anyway. I may or may not keep the biggest Uro depending on how it turns out. But it's doubtful as I've not seen any that were eye catching or that great looking.
