I know if there was painting going on, the fumes can kill your fish. My friends big Oscar died this way.

i lost two pictus catfish and a black ghost knife when we got our floor boards polished i think thats it but i moved my fish in the caravan im staying in and havent moved out of cuz its good anyway i couldn't go in the house cuz the smell was so burning but i left my fish food in the freezer with the evil smell and i think thats what killed my fish and the human food tasted like chemicals so we threw all our food out
sorry for the losses.. you must have been shocked when you seen all the fish dead lol. I know i would have been.
i have to drain all my tanks out today...for some reason there is a rotting smell of fish everywhere, all their scales fell off...no idea why. its disgusting and there is a layer of gunk that has risen to the surface, it is bubbling. its extremely nasty.
there's lots of different oils in varnish that can be in the fumes, as well as turpentine.
Don't see this as an end, but a beginning. Sure you lost all your fish, but you will get relationships and experiences with all new ones. I had a tank wipe out from painting, and it sucked. Now when I don't know if something is in the air I cover the tanks up with trash bags.

i vanished wood floors years ago... and the cat walked across the floor when it was semi dry... the cat a little while later was so limp he could hardly walk... the vet said the toxic fumes found their way through the paws into the blood stream... thank goodness she recovered.. but yes from that day on.. i only paint, vanish or use any chemicals at all on days i can open windows and remove pets from the area...
