Alligator gar loosing colour

30% weekly is fine! daily is not needed unless you are not running filtration ...lol

Only reason I do 70% WC daily is because i dont hve a filter and I feed him beef heart and at the end of the day the tank smells foul ,he eats only big pieces of beef heart n the rest of it either floats or settles down at the bottom which results in bad smell.

makes sense like i said no filter, and see from india sure you water to start is not the greatest as well

not always the case. i do 75-80% on all my tanks. 30% isn't enough!

gars are still semsitive to wq like most fish. bad water and you'll see a difference all around. TEST your water then try to fix a problem otherwise you might as well just do nothing. if you can't eliminate possible common things like bad water how can you change anything to fix it?

your tank is bare bottom, your gar will be light from that. gars lighten in the dark, your gar will change from that. if it is eating well then you should be ok, still TEST the water regularly.

Have to agree with what scott is saying here.

70% can be good, but not every day! that tank almost have no cycle with that kind of WC!

I personally don't see a problem with 70% daily water changes provided the new water matches the old water chemistry wise, and that the large water changes aren't stressing the fish. Atractosteus genus gars can be sensitive to pH fluctuations.

Edit: Forgot to add that most of the live bacteria in a fish tank is on the hard surfaces in the aquarium, not in the water column.

Not true. i have a 26" in white sand and dark as can be..so i would not say the tank coloration is going to play part in what it will do.....It will do what it will do...

Each gar is different in how dark or light the base colouration is, but this is still influenced by environment. Some don't lighten or darken as much as others.

For example in my florida gar pond, there are 20ish floridas all displaying rather dark colouration from the black background and sides. When a new gar is added it usually displays a lighter colour than the current floridas but will darken over the next couple weeks. There is still individual variations amongst the floridas with some being lighter or darker yet all are darker than when they were kept in a lighter tank.

Have you considered adding something like a sponge filter to the tank? This will help a bit with the water quality issue by adding some biological filtration. Also I would suggest removing uneaten foods after the gar has stopped eating.

I had a external filter fitted bt as i said before my gar pulls and damages the filter so I had to remove it..I remove the uneaten food when I do the 70% WC daily
