alligator snapping turtle

Usually you don't filter a typical pond... unless you are talking about a lined pond. If that is what you mean, you'll need to watch out, b/c the toes of those things will go right through the bottom of it. I'd go with a large sandfilter - size should match the amount of water you'll have.

Check with your home owners insurance as well. Often times having a 'dangerous' animal in an outdoor pond area means you have to have a fence over a certain height to keep kids out etc....

thanks bro, ill look into it. its one of those preformed ones you buy at a hardware store

Personally, I don't think having one of these in a backyard pond is a good idea, as they are vicious and attack anything that moves. Mine snaps at the cats tails (and at people) when they walk by the aquarium. I really enjoy having it -- but I have a little one (still) and would never consider having it in water that was not clear, and in a controlled environment. I would not be surprised if the turtle attacked pets and children near the water. If you really want to have one in the yard, I would suggest putting a fence around the pond (and bury the lower edge) and making a real effort to keep things you care about out of the water.

my backyard is not to big, and its completely gated and fenced, with no traffic besides myself, i dont have any pets besides fish.

As far as buying, you can try looking for some reptile conventions near you where you can possibly pick up a captive bread snapper.
Support captive breeding!

careful with these. They grow veery large. If your going to keep it in a glass aquarium keep in mind they can grow up to 26 inches. Remember the rule 10 gallons of water for every inch of shell. They also usually just to chill in the mud all day so a pond would be your best bet
