I'm very eager to build a large plywood tank, but i was wondering has anyone come up with alternative or energy efficient heating methods. It wouldn't be very economical to put ten or twenty or even more 300 watt heaters in for a 1000 gal tank. Or am I over misjudging something. thanks for any input

I think you are way over judging, I dont see why you couldnt use 2-3 heaters unless you are buried in snow and ice. Also you might want to try an inline heater which is installed in the return line of your filter.

thanks, I was just questioning an aquarium calculator i downloaded and for a 1000 gal or so tank it suggested 5000 watts of heating

it really depends on the temp of the room its self. the closer the room temp is to the desired tank temp the less work they need to do so the less you need.

Convert your home PCs to liquid cooling and use your tank as the reservoir.

About as alternative as I can come up with :)

Oooo lasers!

agreed. here where i live, its usually around 80 degrees all year round, so even my larger tanks i can get away with only one or two heaters

You could use a tankless hot water heater or even a regular water heater.

that would cost more then running 20 heaters... :D

I've seen somewhere on the net not sure where. Someone ran a few lengths of baseboard heating under his tank.
