Am i a bad MFK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the fact that your pbass has grown 2" in 6 months tells me you're doing something wrong. learn how to properly house and take care of the 1 pbass you already have before adding any fish to the 240 you're supposed to be getting.

disagree here, if you setup the tank right it wont cost much to run. my 550 G costs under 15$ a month to run. Food yes it will cost a lot for big tanks.

Dang, teach me your secret? Do you have solar panels? What type of pump are you running?

Assuming what appears to be the Australian national average of $0.248 per KWHr (or $0.25 per KWHr in US Dollars) you run your 550G tank on less than 2 killowatt hours per day? That's the equivalent of running an 85 watt pump 24/7.

Add lights, heaters, air pumps and potentially additional powerheads and that will put you way over $15 per month.

How do you pull that off?

Edit:

My 770G uses the following (at $0.34 per KWHr- PG&E rates that the OP would also be charged):
Laguna Max Flo 4200- 160 watts costs me $39 per month
1,800 watts of heaters - in the winter they are on about 4 or 5 hours per day so it costs me ~$80 per month to maintain 78F
Air Pump 16 watts - $4
132 watt flourescent lights- I only turn them on when I'm in the fish room, since I have a skylight, but if I ran them for 8 hours per day like most people, that's $11.

Monthly average total cost to run my tank is around $70 since in the summer I don't have to run heaters.

If we are talking about a tank large enough for an arapaima, multiply everything by at least 10 to get your monthly costs.

PS- Pacumom is also my idol!

My pump uses 80W And a 5W wave maker is all I have :) My fish room is setup as a freezer room so once its heated it holds the heat for a long time. This allows me to not use any heaters.

Its the biggest issue I see with people setting up big tanks, too many heaters when its cheaper to use a non aquarium heater to heat the tank. I am heating over 20 tanks off a heat pump and it costs almost nothing to run. aquarium heaters are a waste of money and not even the best way to heat as glass can not hold heat so if your room is cold your 300W heater will just try to heat your whole house up. If the room is hot the tank will be hot within a set range if the room can hold heat its win.win.

Pumps depends, I use a eheim on that tank laguans on the rest but looking into a new brand of DC pumps better head height then lagunas and less power. I also find too many people have wayy to much flow threw there sump resulting in a bigger pump vs a small pump and a wave maker which in term uses less power with better results in my opinion.

So its hard to say if its is less then 15$ a month as I light and heat the whole room. I pay less then 100$ a month on my fish room and its close to 3000G of water (600G is salt water too so skimmers etc)
