Am i a bad MFK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dont buy one, sell your pbass and get a community tank of fancy guppies...

Untill you get a bigger tank its a bad idea to get any of the fish you have mentioned.

Moving up "as needed" is not always that easy. I purchased our "big" tank 3 years ago, and we still have not set it up. We have had to do an addition to our house to accommodate our "big" tank. Our 2,000 gallon system (tank plus sump) is large enough to house our two little old pacu, but is way too small for arapaimas, etc.

Until you have at least a 5,000 gallon tank, don't even consider getting an arapaima. Big tank upgrades can be extremely difficult to accomplish.
I absolutely love this post because it is 100% true.

Not sure what you mean by the arapaima not coming up offen, there's a guy in san jose selling them every other month, IMO they're too common around here as only like 1 of the 10 people buying them can house them properly

really? well this is the first time i have ever heard of being able to buy one.. im not going to get one though

The GATF and Pima both get massive, over 5ft, so I'd suggest that you drop both of them. Get something like Arowanas or Gars in a 240g, those may fit nicely for quite some time.

and i still dont get what trolled is? look guys im on here talking about it so i dont screw up too bad... at least im trying to figure this stuff out before i buy one.

thanks everyone for their opinions.. thats why im on here is for help

Per Wiki, In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

I don't think you meant to, but given that you only have a 55G, the notion of trading a fish that grows 2' long for fish that can grow 4' (GATF) and 7'+ (Pima) is such a bad idea that it came across as if you were "trolling."

Like Pacumom mentioned, upgrading to large tanks is not easy or cheap. In my opinion, it's best to buy fish you can care for given your current resources. There are plenty of fish you can keep in a 55G, but a PBass, GATF or Pima are not on that list.

the arapiama i guess was more of like.... damn they can get me one of 3 they have all year?!! hell ya.. i probably would not even get it..

but the AGTF i have wanted for a long time, the only fish i want more then that is a Giant Snakehead...

i am really considering the AGTF though

AGTF = GATF (Goliath African Tiger Fish)? Just wanted to make sure we are talking about the same fish.

Giant Snakeheads are some of my favorite fish too, but I doubt you will ever see them in any CA shop since they are illegal here.

It's cool that you like the true monsters in the hobby, but realize that the setups required to keep these species will cost upwards of tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of dollars per month to maintain. Responsible fishkeeping starts with knowing your limits and selecting stock that you can appropriately care for. In my opinion, buying monster growing fish before having a monster tank is irresponsible; life has a way of getting in the way of people's grand plans and when that happens it never ends well for these awesome creatures.

Edit: I just re-read what I wrote and I see that it might be interpreted as a jab at my friend Pacumom, but that was not my intention at all; I agree with her post 100% and it's a great example of what can be involved with "upgrading."

You should sell your pbass, and buy whatever you like and enjoy it while you have it since you can not keep it long in your tank. Just to make sure you do not get attached and willing to let it go/ unload within a few months (may be more). Who says you have to keep it for life? You may want different fish after you own it for a while... Enjoy while you can...

Alex,
I did not take it as a jab. Major upgrading can be very very difficult unless you have unlimited funds and can pay for someone else to do all the work. If it is a big DIY project like ours is, life can in the way. There are things more important that fish and fish tanks such as a major, terminal illness and now a very recent death in our family. Big DIY builds do not always go as fast or the way we want them to go. Sometimes we have to reprioritize our life. In hindsight, the day we moved the fish into the 300 gallon tank, we should have purchased their big tank. If we had done that, they would have been moved into a big tank over three years ago.
