Am I getting old???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Never was a big fan of neil Young, or Jethro tull and the like, but most popular music blows. Most of it is just sampled and played back while some spoiled Disney made star lip syncs it.

Although he does alot of sampling, and uses riffs from other songs, I have seen Kid Rock in concert twice, and well, the boy can play. He played every instrument on the stage, guitar, drums, keyboard, bass, and even broke out a harmonica... I was impressed.. Awesome show.. Great effects..

Saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play with double trouble, and his brother Jimmy and the thunderbirds.. THAT was a Killer show... I still get chills thinking about it.. He died 2 weeks later.. I remember where I was when I heaard the news.

Saw Pink Floyd.. Best friggin light show, and sound hands down.. no competition..

Saw Nine inch nails...
wasn't impressed.

Saw Ted Nugent.. Man that guy deserves his own thread... I think he might be my hereo, if i needed one..

Ok, I need a beer...

Anyway.. Yeah..

ikevi, you may not be a fan of my music, but I'm a fan of your avatar. What is that? BTW, that MuteMath vid is great.

Yah we all have our tastes. (I have a friend that only listens to gwar like music... that gets old fast.)

As for my Avatar, it is an OB blue based Sciaenochromis fryeri. (It is very hard to find blue based ones, most are red based.)

And I had forgotten about Mute Math.

aww man whats wrong with gwar? :grinno:
I head if you see them live you will probably come out bleeding or at least covered in fake blood.

I'm a huge Neil Young fan! I've seen him live three times; Year of The Horse Tour; Music in Head Tour; and the Greendale Tour. He was outstanding each time, leaving the audience knowing they had witnessed a legendary master craftsman.

I also do like newer music as well, but exposure is very limited for the next generation of legends. Top 40 radio only plays a limited selection of untalented posers and MTV sold out to reality shows. I have found that college radio stations are the best place for me to discover the newer artists that the mainstream ignores.

The great thing about getting older is that we no longer are bound by fashion, fads, trends, and being cool. It is only when we get old enough to not care how others perceive us that we really get cool.

Zigman, thats interesting, I've never been a fan of kid rock, and I loathe that new song of his which butchers two classics, good to see he has some talent though.

While I was watching those two videos I was thinking about how a lot of modern music has to be "different" or have some kind of gimmick, its not enough any more to be able to write nice lyrics and a good tune, or deliver an honest stripped down performance.

Another group I've been listening to lately is The Travelling Wilburys (for those who don't know they were George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty). They are such an amazingly tanelted group of guys who just came together by accident and made some really good music. Not outstanding, mindblowing or boundry-pushing music, but just good simple musical music. I tried thinking of a modern-day version of the wilburys and struggled to think of 5 people who could come close, I got;
Dave Grohl (foo fighters)
Matthew Bellamy (muse)
Billy Joe Armstrong (greenday)
Eddie Vedder (pearl jam)
someone else
and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums

I just feel like I'm having a real old codger type moment. I've been watching videos of Neil Young (among others) on youtube and I can't help but feel that music has gone down hill big time in the past ~10 years. I saw Neil live in January this year, and even at age 63 he put on a hell of a show, making most of the newer bands at the festival look like a bunch of amateurs.
I just watched these two videos of him performing Old Man and Heart Of Gold back in the 70's, just him and an acoustic guitar. He wrote the lyrics and the music, plays the guitar and harmonica and sings the song, I can't think of a modern artist (I hesitate to call them musicians) with half that much talent. There is no one I can think of who can be compared to the likes of Young, George Harrison, Bob Dylan etc, in terms of being a lyricist, a musician and a singer.

So is most modern music rubbish, or am I just turning into a grumpy old bugger? :screwy:

It's been ages since I've heard anyone say codger!!! I thought you'd have to be from eiter Aus or Nz to say that. lol.

But yeh, new music this day is fair crap. My dog's **** has mor musical talent than the bands these days. Why isn't there any bands like COld Chisel these days? Bands who write songs for the working man? I hate these songs which have no meaning, or the ones which are directed at sleazy stoned teens. I like music to have a meaning for the average man.

Only new bands I like are Airbourne, the Darkness and stone gods.

24 here, I enjoy Neil Young at times.

Honestly I am very strict with my musical tastes. I listen for talent, creativity, and that "x factor" that is so hard to capture with most "musicians" these days.

Neil Young has been doing music for quite a while respectably. In this situation I think it boils down to your taste in music. Generally, most of the new music produced for the radio/i-tunes market is very pedestrian sounding. I always feel like something is lacking... Or that something was never really there.

I like to dig deep into sub-genres to find artists who are truly unique and creative. They aren't governed by a music label and retain their original style. It's how I have found most of my favorite artists.
