Am I paying too much for rent?

Thanks guys....makes me feel a little bit better about my expenses. I was already thinking I could cover this apt, I just really wanted to make sure. I really really really want this apt. They approved me no prob, but I know that they just want my money.

correct they want your money, however, if you couldn't afford the apartment, miss payments, get evicted...... they don't win either. so really, you shouldnt worry
 
an economics graduate may be able to help you, locate one
 
check out condo's or a house... with that kind of rent.. you probably could own just as well... if your job is long term and secure...first time buyers of a house get big breaks now...or give it a year and look around so you know where you like to live in the future.

I was thinking the same thing Liz. Here in WI $950 can get you a decent HOUSE, not renting and throwing your money out the window. I dont know what the housing market is like by you but maybe you should look into buying not renting. I refuse to rent, you may as well just be burning your money IMO. Take your money and invest it, and right now is the time to do it, rates are at an all time low, and the GOVT gives you a big tax break. good luck with whatever you do though.

Completely agree! However, my problem is this: I am living in a pretty bad neighborhood. I am worried about things getting broken into, and so I was limiting myself to the nicer areas. In the nicer areas, I can only afford to rent (for now). I definitely want to move to owning next year.
 
don't worry about owning right away. decide if you really want to live in the area before you buy. one nice thing about renting is that when things break, it is the landlord that is responsible to fix. this can help lots starting off. then as you get more established and have more money to put into your place, you can buy tools and nicer things and keep up the home better

yes i do not believe in rushing into anything either... take your time rent for a year and scope the area.. find the deals.. most of all enjoy your new place, people and job... in a year you will have a better idea of what you want...so many doors will open.. so many will shut.. your going to be learning alot... so for awhile this is the way to go...

I'm not sure about prices in college park, but I'm paying about 50% more in silver spring for a 1 bedroom. It appears our income is a bit more than what you posted though. Cost of living in DC is crazy. I think the general rule of thumb is approximately 25% of monthly income (1 weeks pay) is what you want to spend on housing per month.
