Am I the only one who hates eheim canisters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 4 eheim pro II's Best filters ever! Never had an issue in our 4 years on any filter. Easy to clean, silent and the best warranty of 3 years! The flow is very good and dont need to be cleaned for over 4 months at least!

You guys talking about only having to clean every 4 months.... that has more to do with the size of your tank & bioload then it does with the filter. That's just how it works- there's no magic to it regardless of the filter.

On the eheim classic series... even if they would have shortened the basket by an inch or so... then you'd have room for filter pads under the basket. That would be a perfect solution- and so simple.

I don't care what anyone says though... having to dump all the biomedia out just to change a filter pad is just a rediculous notion. The biomedia should be set & forget. I shouldn't EVER have to mess with it.

Media baskets means bypass. No baskets means no bypass. For a minute inconvenience, I would rather have the latter.

I am ALL about convenience. Your idea sounds good in theory, but you start tacking on too many of those "minute" inconveniences, and you'll have a mother-load of PITA's before you know it.

There's no reason that work well & be easy can't coexist happily.

I love my eheims. My pro2 has been running non-stop for over 10 years now. I haven't cleaned it in almost a year now and it's on a heavily stocked tank that has cichlids and plecos. I also have the 2217 that I just bought 2 years ago. I like it for the simplicity and efficiency. I have the ehfisub and ehfimech in nylon bags for super easy clean up. I also have the 2217 in a heavily overstocked tank and haven't cleaned it in 6 months. I also have fluval 4 series and those just suck compared to the eheims. They're not as reliable, louder, and are harder to clean even thought they have all the "conveniences" of basket for their medias.

best filters I have ever owned. I got 4 2217 running a 2215 and a 2260 monster! One of the 2217 is almost as old as I am. Very reliable simple design with no crappy baskets needed and there is NO water bypass AT ALL! Oh and filter floss is supposed to be placed at the top of the filter not at the bottom buddy. This way you don't even have to touch the bio media which you are supposed to shake out at least once a month to remove dead colonies of bacteria to populate new healthy growth. The rest of the canister filter companies are just copycats except for some models of Fluval and Rena like FX5 and 405, XP3. The original Basket filters.

i agree with Cross eheim is pretty much Boss when it comes to filtration
i have both fluval and eheim, the fluval is alot easier to with baskets but makes the flow rate decrease

I really don't understand what all the hype is about with these things. Some people go on about their eheim running for 10 years... I just don't see it happening. I have a 2213... it's a poor design IMHO. I've had the motor's ceramic rod break during operation, I've had the plastic tabs on the canister break that hold the clips for the lid, and worst of all, when you want to replace a filter pad, you have to disassemble the whole thing- disturbing biomedia just to get to the pad, only to discover that because the polishing pad is downstream from the bio-media, the bio-media needs to be dumped & rinsed as well. What a PITA just to swap a filter pad.

I find this all especially annoying when the solutions are so simple... use a different, less brittle plastic for the canister, and reverse the flow to a top-down design so that the mechanical filtration- all of it, can be done before the bio-media & can be easily accessed without having to dump everythign out.

I hate cleaning that damn thing. It was a waste of $$.

/rant. Sorry. I had to get that off my chest. Maybe some of you will understand. :lol2:

There is nothing wrong with Eheim Classic Canister filters. If people are going on about how they last for 10 years without a problem , did you ever stop think that maybe you're the one not doing something right?

I still have an Eheim 2213 from a few years back and I used it on a 75 Gallon that was set up for African Cichlids......Which I think was under filtered, I needed a bigger filter, but the point is that the 2213 still works ......

I am sorry if you had to break a sweat in order to maintenance your canister filter. Sometimes a little work ensures the long life of the fish that you chose to take care of.

If it bothers you to change the filter media which doesn't stay clean forever, then dont stay in the aquarium hobby.

I mean what do you want me to say? You gotta clean the filter..

I bought a 2217 a few months back and it took me about a half hour to remove the media and rinse it out in tank water and then put it back and its in tip top shape. I dont see whats so hard about maintenancing your canister filter?

 Dude! Your fish take dumps in the water! Therefore your media is not going to stay clean forever :screwy:

The only biomedia that is set & forget is an empty tank

If it bothers you to change filter pads in a canister then dont feed your fish so much or you can put them individually on time out for taking dumps without prior notice.
