ammonia poisoning or back injury?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never had ammonia do anything like this. Doesn't mean it's not possible though. I don't think his back is broken since he's able to swim and has full range of fin motion. I think it's "fish scoliosis".

It's a back injury; the gar most likely got spooked and darted into the side of the aquarium. Injuries like this are reasonably common with gars, but can be prevented. They do sometimes recover to some extent, but often the gar will never have a straight back again. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as it can swim okay and get food just fine; if it gets worse, then you may have to put it down.

This is what I meant. :P

im not into dropping a pet iv moved 3 times with.. nope, and if he duznt get completely strait then its a charecter, it makes him look like a grumpy old fart. any way he's already looking a little better, ill post pics

To me it looks like a broke back gar.

Sorry to tell you but it probably wont heal.
But you still may as well try to put some aquarium salt to try to heal it.
P.s have you ever seen any aggression in the tank, have you ever startled him?
But you never know it could be the ammonia.

Best of luck
