AMMONIA SPIKE!! HOW CAN I FIX?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank is bare bottom and i replaced some media last night in the filter.

You changed "some" media last night but not all correct? This started before you touched the filter, is that also correct? Do you add anything to the water? Prime, AmQuel etc.? Have you tested your tap water? How old is the test kit? Is it strips or a regular liquid test?

No not all. I know that bad.

Im adding prime to the tap water since out local water has chorline in it. The test kit is brand new. I wasnt messing around when my rays stopped eating.

Im not even at home and all I can think about is my poor rays

When you get home test your tap water as a control sample. I'm trying to help you narrow this down because somthing dosen't make sense. The tank has been set up for a while, you never had an ammonia issue before and now with a new test kit your seeing an ammonia spike?

I tested the tap water and no ammonia at all. I did some water changes and also put some ammo chips in. They also had a tank bacteria at the LFS that suppose to help during ammonia spikes. I let it cycle for a few hours and did a test. Its still very high. I will try again in 8 hours before I go to work.

Hmm if your not getting ammonia from tap then that narrows it down. You remember anything that could have happened prior to the spike? Gues all you can do is just keep up with the daily massive water changes to decrease the ammonia untill your bacteria catches up.

Not really anything has changed thats the worst part. But I am going to build one of these DIY k1 media bottles for inside the tank. Its gonna look ugly as hell but if it does the trick im gonna be happy

Dragon......I am having the same problem. My ammonia level went from around 0.5 to around 2.0 in the last couple days. I did a 50% water change last Friday, re-filling with tap water that is relatively clean. I plan on doing another 50% tonight.

I believe my problem may be this: I started cycling the tank on 12/30/11, only adding 3 snails. However, about a week later I added 4 fish. Then one week after that I added another 4 fish. And, one week after that I added 4 more fish. Even though I had been doing large water changes each week (50% each Friday), I believe I rushed into adding too many fish before the tank cycled a bit. As a newbie, I defiitely learned my lesson. So, now it's in crisis management mode.

I wish you the best as well. I did my test this morning at the ammonia has gone down a bit. Not anywhere near safe. Looks like tonight is super water change night again.
