AMMONIA SPIKE!! HOW CAN I FIX?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What was in the 90 before the rays? What do you have for a filter system on the 90? Sounds like you might not have enough area for bacteria to grow to support your system. 3 6inch rays give off alot of waste. If they are healthy quite feeding them till your bacteria catches up.

fx5 should be enough if all 3 trays are filled with ceramic or something else for bacteria to cling to. If you have any other tanks running with gravel in them you could put clean gravel from another tank in a plastic coffee can in the 90. Some bacteria would be on the gravel to help eat the ammonia but for now huge water changes is all that is going to help. Make sure you add something to get rid of the chlorine in your tap water so it does not kill your bacteria but you probily already know this. Good luck

Well I did a big water change and the ammonia seems to have gone down by half. I am using prime as a conditioner as well as a little extra to help eat away the ammonia.

Because im a weirdo I also had some k1 media sitting around and I put it in a pop bottle with an air stone as a DIY project that should help in the future.

I cure ammonia spikes with a three-pronged approach (two already mentioned); water changes, ammonia removal carbon chip and Micro-Lift Nite-Out II (I get the complete cycling kit for serious issues). Worked every time for me.

chances are ther will be clorine or something like it, in your tap water best to run some in a plastic bin and leave top off for a few days, also make sure u have a ripple on the tank water surface to increase the gas exchange.
sounds to me like when you did a clean the bio media lost the good bacteria

I wish you the best as well. I did my test this morning at the ammonia has gone down a bit. Not anywhere near safe. Looks like tonight is super water change night again.

Just an update...I did ~50% water change last night, checked the ammonia levels this morning, and the levels dropped significantly (to a 'safe' level).

In the same boat. But until i see 0 i wont be happy. Would now be a good time to introduce some some media to the filter?
