AMONIA?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For that stock list i would look into additional filtration a large eheim 2260 full of substrate pro and purigen. You also should maximise your fx5s with quality bio, you are wasting the filter no carbon, you don't need it. Also i would cut feeding to smaller portions and skipping days , i wouldn't feed at all till you get things right. hope that helps good luck with the pond of monsters.

ya i was looking at that. it looks like that would be the only one but the problem is its rated for like a 250gph pump on the small one up to a 100 gallons. its 17 inches tall wich would be the one i could fit under my tank....but i have a pump that pushes 800gph roughly.
You just put a "T" and a valve on the return line so you divert the needed flow to the FBF...Just like the manufacturer recommends...

how about a pentair aquatics fluidized bed filter (sand filter)?

I absolutely agree; FBF's are a bit of a hassle, at first, but they absolutely manhandle waste (it is sufficient, even with quite a few stingrays who produce the most ridiculous amount of ammonia).

May I also suggest that you take a look at the age of your test kit? Sometimes test kits expire, and you get unusually high readings. I can usually just look at the surface of the water and smell it to tell if it has an ammonia problem. If all seems well, it might be worth your time to get a different test kit.

Also, if you use ammonia binders, it usually still shows up on ammonia tests for quite some time. Just get yourself some sufficient filtration, ease the cycling on them by doing small water changes daily (no more than maybe 20%, so that you don't upset the biofiltration) and get some good media in your fluvals. Also, if you're interested, you can set up a DIY biotower off of one of your Fluvals, which would give you about 5 gallons of additional media at your disposal.

Hope it helps, and keep us updated!

my test kits are fine. the ammonia goes to 0.25 after the the filter cleaning. i dont have a fluvol, i have a ocean clear pressure system. im gonna try and re plumb it so i can back flush the system to clean the filter that way so i can keep the bio already on it. i dont know anyone that has a FBF. do they have to be cleaned?

nope I already knew the size ahead of time and I have my 2500 planned out for next years new house but thanks for everyones help and look outs thanks alot for real you guys were the best

May have already been covered you may be getting a false reading from your test kit.....If you use Prime uses Seachems test kit.for example. Ammonia removers will give certain test kits false results. I'll see if I can find an earlier thread that covered this.....

you know I was thinking about this that I could be getting false readings but not sure

How old is your test kits, I have also had test kits give me false readings. I would usually think of this first after knowing my tank has been cycled and all the fish are fine.

The issue with the Fx5 is that the contact time is limited since there is a higher velocity and when you don't use all 3 baskets for bio media, you can run into issues.

I had a nitrate test and a ammonia test give false reads, scary when you're test say you're fish should be dead.
Always test twice for confirmation...
first clue that the test is fouled, are readings that would make for dead fish...

Another trick is to test a double amount of water...if the test calls for 5Ml of water use 10Ml and double the drops...

Redtail king, you already have 2 RTC's and your considering mine thats 19". All that in 240. Even if you want him I wouldn't give him to you.

sorry
