Amorous male Leo stung by Mrs Leo

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's not arching his tail anymore but he is still curling his skirts upwards and releasing flat, although not as harshly/sharply as before. It's similar to the 'death curl' we all dread but he curls upwards briefly and then releases for 5 seconds.
I'm assuming as the death curl is a neurological condition that the toxin must be traveling through the brain the cause this.
His breathing has settled a little but is still strong ... come on boy, fight it !

I actually think rays are immune to thier own toxins, I would suggest getting some eggcrate and some suction cups... pinch the eggcrate inbetween suction cups to keep the eggcrate in place, Its light and doesnt cost much.

I had a male motoro that was stung by a younger ray. The stinger was lodged between his gill slits. It worked its way out in a few weeks. Good luck with your male. I think he will be ok.

Sometime between 4 and 5am the male succumed to a single stab to the stomach.
I've taken him out of the tank and examined him closely, there was a superficial graze near his mouthparts but a stab mark directly into his stomach.
Thanks for all the knowledgable and helpful advice but I don't think he was ever going to survive this.

There may be a very small silver lining to this story, when we returned from a meal earlier in the day the tank was cloudy again .... exactly the same as it was 110 days before the birth of the 4 pups who will help take my mind off this sad turn of events. So the 'black widow' could be a single Mum in a few months .... I'll wait and see before I think about replacing the male.

I've had that fish for seven years and watched him grow through four different tanks to reach 15" .... sad day

Definately a lesson learnt though .... make sure you have on standby the means to securely separate the pair after birth.

Sorry to hear about your ray.

Thread cleaned up, anymore derails will result in an infraction...

keep them seperated... keep your water pristine go do a few very large water changes add salt i would do 1.5 pounds per 100 gallons and just keep it clean.. ive seen a ray get pierced right behind its spiracle and live.... also as you have done keep the tank dark...
