Amphilophus Amarillo vs Arenal Barred Midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Amarillos have some of the best profiles in the amphilophus genus.

This right here. Looking at the pics, and I instantly thought that one has a different looking head shape than the other. The Midas in the pics has a much more "pointy" snout than the other fish. That pointy snout looks exactly the same on the Midas at my house.

And I agree, I like the look of the less pointy snout a lot more.

Of course, I'm not sure if the profile is what makes it Amarillo species, or if that's just a local morph or breed within the species that has that head profile....

Wonder what these guys look like now? How big is this aquarium you have lots of tank busters in there.

They look mostly the same to the 2nd set of pics - Amarillo getting a bigger hump though. They are in a 300, which is proving a lot smaller than I thought it was. I'm working on another tank as all my other smaller tanks are now full. I've moved out all of the Parachromis, except for one female Freddy. All the convict types are out now, but for two large HRP males. And the Trimac has his own tank w/ a girl now - too much fighting with the Barred Midas, which is now running the tank. I'm down to 19 fish (I can tell will be too many, so trying to figure out what I will remove next) - the Barred Midas and Amarillo are my favorites, and unfortunately these are the two not getting along. The only real aggression other than an occasional chase is the Barred Midas and going after the Amarillo if he comes out of his protected spot, but the Amarillo doesn't seem to have but rare damage that heals before the next round - he is not allowed to swim freely though, except during feeding time - current inhabitants are:

1 Barred Midas, male
1 Amarillo, male
1 Chancho, male
1 Red/White Midas, male?
1 Festae, female
1 Synspilum, ?
1 Regani, ?
1 Escondido Carpinte, ? (with a messed up jaw from fight that healed but visually messed up)
2 HRP, Males
1 Freddy, female (paired up w/ a HRP)
1 Jack Dempsey, male
4 Clown loaches
1 Squeaker cat
1 Synodontis - not sure type
1 Curvier Bichir

Really nice collection, I am jealous over the barred midas though.
