I'm so confused, so many nice fish but only one or two spots for 8-10" fish availible in my tank. I have the option of:

Amphilophus lyonsii
Amphilophus Robertsoni
Crenicichla menezesi
F1 Peru True Rivulatus
Grammodes
Istlanum
Herichthys Carpintis Vontehillo

This IS a tough choice. I'd go with the Crenicichla....no, probably the lyonsi....or maybe the carpintis.:confused:

Wow, that is just how my brain is working looking at that list lol.

They are all so nice looking but aggression would seem to be what is holding me back along with the fact that a 5x2x2 is not as big as I thought when I bought it. I should have went with the 6x2x2.

I'm thinking I could do the pike (max 8" Source: pikecichlid.com) and the Rivulatus. I have heard that Rivulatus are more aggro than saums but they do stay quite a bit smaller (6-8").

One of my tanks is a 5'x2'x25" and I know what you mean. The pike should be ok, and the rivalatus stays a decent size too. The Synspillum will get pretty big but the Midas is a female so will stay a decent size. All the fish are fairly aggressive but hopefully can hold their own and eventually co-hab together. GL

Sometimes I hate how cichlids are so random in their temperaments, you really can't plan squat. It is all educated guesses, I suppose that is part of the attraction.

I think my midas has maxed at about 9.5", she is coming up for 2 years old around about Dec time (I got her in Feb 2009 @ approx 2").
I know the syn is likely to be the biggest I have at a max of 14" or so.

I did read that this particular pike is pretty mellow but that requires more reading.
It is the GT that is throwing me, I know they stay smaller but I also know they are slightly more aggro than saums. Info is hard to find because everyone thinks or questions if their Saum is a true GT. It is frustrating.

Are you on about the pike?

The pike is in, after some reading it has a guaranteed spot as long as it doesn't sell between now and tomorrow morning.

I would say go with the lyonsi...I have a 5" lyonsi in a community with a 10" GT, 8" v. breidohri, 6" syn, 5" salvini, 4" "escondido" & a trio of Istlanums all 3-4".

What tank dimensions if you don't mind me asking?

On a side note, my midas has been acting wierd of late. She hides in the top corner at the back behind my powerhead, when she does come out she darts everywhere and she has even bumped into the glass a lot. She is not being a "glass banger" either. She also been listing to her right side a lot and refusing to eat much.

Nothing has changed, she just started to act this way. It is the bumping, listing and darting that is worrying me more than not eating much. Anyone got any thoughts?
