cichlidfish;3472035; said:That is what I'd like to know. You can get the blind cave version, but I think they are boring. The blind cave tetra is an isolated group of mexican tetra that evolved in dark caves. They apparently got trapped in caves after floods.
Retuks;3472680; said:this fish is completely unavailable commercially like alot of north American wildlife species. owning them would be equivalent to owning a street pigeon. nobody sells them you just have to go get them yourself/ find a way for friends to scoop some for you.
cichlidfish;3477886; said:That is ashame, because I'm sure they could become popular in the hobby. Everyone loves colorful fish w/ teeth. Look at exos for example. All it takes is someone to collect some in texas, quarentine them and sell them to fish stores. Hell, maybe they can be breed in home aquariums.

much in the way you can't compare william hung to bruce lee.
SURE they are the same species (more or less), but Bruce lee could kick WAY more ass and is 10x more entertaining!
The fact that the relative cave fish are blind completely changes their behavior and their "cool" factor. nobody would want blind Rhombeus that never open their mouths and wiggle around bumping the 5 sides of the tank.

I catch those tetras in my ditch, they can be hard to find certain times of the year, have not looked for them lately.
Just noticed this thread speaking of my fish. I kept these tetra's in a 110G with a baby spotted gar I had. When I put shiners in to feed the gar, the left over (live) shiners would slowly be ripped to shreds by these Mex. Tetra's. Rather than swarm them while they where alive, they would "hit and run" over a long period until they were disabled and then it was on. They would devour what was left of the shiner just like a piranha. Unfortunately for the Tetra's a Gar 10X their size didn't care if they looked cool or not. He just saw them as food. I have to get some more in a month or so in my local creek.Retuks;3523710; said:lets ask you since you got experience...
are they in any way like piranha? (besides being characins). or is that mouth full of teeth just a trick of the camera?
somebody said they shred through feeders like piranha, but looking at blindo's i just can't see that happening. not even congos do that (to any effective use)
