  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the substrate is shell grit.
How's your nitrate? Sounds like a nitrate factory in the making. Are you cleaning that weekly?

lol, i get this alot.

Nitrate is 5ppm, havn't done water change since October (slack, i know). Got the idea from one of my LFS', they have had their reef running for 13 years with the same filtration and their nitrate is 0. They have also gone 3 years once without a water change (not something i would do) and nitrate was 0.

Whatever works...

OK..... Let's think about this for a second.
It's an LFS... They sell fish and coral.
The fish cannot be put into a bag without water. Unless they sell those special fish. Same can be said regarding coral.
So that means along with the bag of livestock, some of their water comes out. Eventually more livestock will be sold. Hence the need to replace the water that goes with every piece of stock that gets sold.
That means water change.
They just do it, where you/they do not think it's a water change, but it is.
Anytime water is removed and replaced. It's a WC.

Yes thats true, except i'm talking about their 5x2x2 display tank!

It is always good to do WC. Are there corals in there? How do you/they replace depleted nutrrients, like Ca, alk & Mg, etc?

I agree with the water changes, i just get a bit lazy. I have some acropora and a few other things as i'm just starting on corals again and use Seachem calcium and reef builder.
They have everything in theirs, clams, acro, lobo, many other soft and stony's and they use a calcium reactor with ph controller and they add iodine and strontium once a week.

Anyway, i have discarded the anemone idea JUST incase the light is not enuf(spend toooo much on the tank, i aint spending extra on the sump).

Will be adding another tomato and 2 seahorses, anyone see dramas in this??? Bearing in mind the sump is 77gal, flow is slow and will feed the horses personally if they too slow for the tomato's which i'm sure they will be. Plus i can get a tropical breed here so temp won't be a prob, does anyone see any other probs i have missed???
