Angel Fish Eggs??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How do I go about starting a brine shrimp hachery?
O, also..If they do lay more eggs..I will not be moving the parents over. I'll be doing it artificially.

Unforunately when I went home at lunch time yesterday, about half of the egg were gone..the rest weren't white and looked good.(not sure if they would still turn white after almost 48 hours). However, I didn't take them out at lunch and when I got home after work..they were still there.. SO I headed out to the petstore to purchase a tank ect..and when I came home...poof..no more eggs:(

It's okay though, I'll set up this tank and let it run regardless..jujst so I'm ready if there is a next time:)I got some slate and placed it throughout the tank..:)Hopefully all goes well. I was debating all day yesterday and the night before to take the eggs out..or if since it is there first set of eggs, to let nature run its course...
luckily for me..the fish decided haha

you should carefully move other fish out of that tank and let the parents take care of the eggs and fry, angel fish are great parents!

I don't think my angels got that memo, they're always eating their own eggs

I immediately moved the eggs over to the small tank and dosed with methalyn blue ?spelling....Is that okay?
If someone can tell me what I do from here on out...from experience of a link I can go to that would direct me to a the answer..I'd appreciate it.

Depends on your pair. Most angels are so inbred they don't seem to have retained their wild parental instincts. I always encourage people to get wild caught or F1 or F2 angels if they are serious about breeding them.

It's easy enough from here on out. I wouldn't change the water until they hatch. Once they hatch, they will become "wrigglers" for a couple days--they will continue to feed off their egg sacs and won't swim around. Once they become free swimming, they will continue to eat their egg sac for a day or two. Then you can start feeding them.
You should also know the methylene blue will have killed any beneficial bacteria you had in the tank. So once they are free swimming, you will want to use some cycled media from one of your other tanks after you've done some water changes, you could add carbon to completely remove the MB as well.
The best food is freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. There is also frozen and "instant" baby brine you can use. You can also use some fry starter food they sell in stores. Feed several times a day, and do lots of water changes, AT LEAST 50% every other day.

good luck man, ive never successfully bred any fish..hopefully you have better luck than me...
i have also tried to set up my own brine shrimp hatchery and i failed at that too... :( i suck at life..lol

So was it bad to dose it with MB? I guess I don't need to dose it again right?
I thought it was required to prevent any fungus....I read that it kills all beneficial bacteria as well, hence why I set up this other tank, I've added an additional filter to one of my cycled tanks that has been going now for 2 months(just as back up)..could I move this over once they are free swimming.(after I do a 50% water change).

Thank again:)

This morning they were all still there and none looked as if they'd turned white..I guess anotehr 24 hours and I'll be more accurate and determining that..we shall wait and see:).

No, methylene blue is great for fish eggs if there are no parents to care for them--since you decided to hatch the eggs separately from the parents, it's a good idea. BTW, is there a reason you didn't give the parents a chance to raise the eggs? That's part of the fun with cichlids.
You've got the right idea. You can dose again before they hatch, but once they hatch you will want to remove the methylene blue and add that filter from your other tank. Also, make sure any power filter intake is covered. Also, light will neutralize methylene blue, so you want to make sure the eggs stay dark--no aquarium light and no sunlight while you're treating.
