Angels or Denison barbs with rams?

Yea, at least that's what I would do with my tap at 7.6 and really hard

I don't think my water is super hard. I use to use RO/distilled bottled water from the grocery store on my 20 gallon before my girlfriend took it over. The GH tested between 60 and 80ppm and the KH tested around 60ppm when I was using 50/50 tap and RO. I figure that makes my tap about GH 160ppm or so and KH about 120-140ppm. If it is just a straight calculation, then I figure I have a good, but not impossible buffer and medium/mild hard water. If I have trouble getting my sev eggs to hatch, I will experiment slowly with Fluval peat granules to soften water and reduce pH. I will slowly add more until I am comfortable with the levels and of course to not put them into shock. Another thing I read was that Alder cones were great for egg/fry tanks since the cones released natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as lower pH a bit. But I can't find anyone that sells them. But again, I would only fiddle if I can't get my sev eggs to hatch or the fry to survive. We shall see.

Just get adults, juvies are much more sensitive and they may require the daily water changes you hear about, adults not so much. You could get away with weeklywater changes with adults. I suggest peat and driftwood to maintain a stable ph. Black water extract on new water changes

I thought the main reason for daily water changes with juveniles was because people overfed their discus to get them to grow faster, so they have to change water frequently to keep the uneaten food from fouling up the water?

I am OCD about it, but I start all my fish out as baby size and grow them myself. It's a weird control freak thing. LOL If I got discus, I would definitely want to start them out as juvies and watch their colors come in as they grew. It's what I have done with my turquoise severums. I bought them from Jeff Rapps when they were only an inch long and have watched their colors finally start to come through now around 3-4" long.

It has been my experience and The breeder down the street, Mac Discus and Jack Weaselly discus that you have to have a minimum of 5 to deter the aggression. I started with 4 years ago and then I had 1 as they grew. So I put 7 in a 75 and they did great. They were a lot of work. but I loved them so I converted my 300 into a discus tank and developed a school of 24 discus. They were stunning but a lot of work with the water changes. When I got too busy I had to re-home them back to the local guy, Mac Discus. I really enjoyed them.

Yeah. This will probably be the reason I decide to pass on discus. I work so much and while doing daily or even every other day water changes is not impossible, I don't know how long it will last until it feels more like a chore rather than me enjoying my fish. I should probably wait until at when I am not so busy to try and keep them.

Thanks for the post. :)
