Is that because I have enough support and that it is level? I am afraid it might bend or not. If I don't need to use plywood on top of that stand, I will use that plywood to make my canopy.

The tank will be supported by the plastic trim. There is no need for foam or plywood as the tank does not need support across the bottom. Any small imperfections should be corrected before installing the tank.

A little update of what I did tonight. Me and my brother spent approximately 2 hours working on it, cutting out the plywood for covering, as well as making sure the cabinet door fits in there as well. After I eat, I will go and stain it to see how it comes out. Any suggestions/tips on staining? This will be my first time staining. Lol

Let the pictures begin

Tips? Rubber gloves and lots of ventilation. No secret to it.

I used to stain our stands that we sold to LFS's with rags. Looks kinda funny rubbing on stain with my old socks.

Rub it on. Best to go at an angle the first time the go over it at an opposite angle the second pass over so it gets rubbed in evenly into the grain of the wood. Let it sit a min which is usually accomplished by the simple act of doing the rest of the stand. Go back over it with a clean rag and wipe off excess stain.

Let dry.

Again rubber gloves or you'll be funny colors for a week at least and ventilation or you'll be typing like a drunken fool when you try to report back to us.

A top sheet on the stand isn't required with glass tanks as the glass can support the weight from just the edges. Some of us..... (me)...... tend to over build things.

Thanks Pharaoh and Muni for the information about the top sheet, now that you mention it, most foam I see is from Acrylic tanks.

As for the staining, thanks for the tip on the ventilation. I'm doing this in a basement in Lincoln, Nebraska where it's approximately -7 degrees outside right now. I would take this to my garage, but that's through 3 feet of snow. Not a lot of ventilation in the basement, but I guess I just have to do it anyways. Will try and get a few breather after every 5 or so minutes to recuperate ;) . Wish me luck.

I have been smelling silicone (vinegar), alcohol, spray paint, and will be smelling stain next. Gosh, I hope my brain can take it all! :)

Just got done with the first coat, trial staining. That was not bad at all! I said 'trial' because if this side does not work, I still have another sheet of plywood I can use as the front, and this is my back side. It went really well, the only advice that I would give to anyone is.

Wear gloves!!!! But if your nose itch, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT SCRATCH IT!

I have a few questions:

1. How big of a pump should I get for my sump? What's the recommended turnover rate, or should I go overkill (as I did with the stand) and have like 10000X (not likely) turnover lol . I'm probably getting those sponge pond pumps that have oil-free motor.

2. If my PVC overflow's diameter is 1 1/4 in , will it matter if my pump's output size be only 3/4 in or just an inch?

Thanks!

The size of the pump is purely dependant on what you desire. Typically turnover rates are 3-5 times, but some go higher than 10. I just aim for good flow within the tank.

1 1/4" will flow approximately 900gph. I would shoot for a pump that is about the same size before head height. The output of the pump is a pressurized line, it can be smaller. You won't have any problems. Just be sure to match the plumbing to the pump. Bigger tubing doesn't hurt, just don't go smaller.

Some more staining of the tank. Will cut out the back board and stain that later on in the day. After staining, will go over with a few coats of polyurethane for protection against water damage and a better shine as well. The final coat of shine will be done after I install all the trims.
