2nd that coppersafe is very hard on fish like bichirs..........

i've seen that before on bichirs seems to be some what common with them i've heard salt baths or a simeple parastie Med with get rid of it

Hello,

it's Macrogyrodactylus polypterii, an external parasite that can be often found on imported polypterids.
When bichirs are living in their natural habitats they are able to live with these parasites but under aquaristic terms the affection is often lethal - due to secundar bacteriosis (the parasite harms the slime coat and opens the door for bacteria, also the affected bichir is rubbing on almost everything he can found to get shot of the parasites).
A heavy problem is the exorbitant reproduction rate of the parasite! This rate is almost bacteria-like ...
Macrogyrodactylus polypterii is a master of survival - another problem of the fight against the parasite ...

Here in Germany it's common that much bichirs that were imported do have these parasites - so it is the most common reason of lethality of polypterids. The ways of import of polypterids to Europe seem to be otherwise (no quarantine in Africa, less knowledge of the dealers) than to US or Asia.

The medication with Praziquantel or supplements that are including Praziquantel is the best way to fight against Macrogyrodactylus - if you do not have the opportunity to use Flubenazol, the best supplement against these parasites. In some cases Macrogyrodactylus comes back after medication with Praziquantel ... as i said: Survivors!!!
I do know this from some bichir keepers in Germany - they medicated with Praziquantel and after two months or so the parasite was there again.

Common medications against external parasites are useless when fighting against Macrogyrodactylus - another common lethal factor here in Germany.

Greetings

Uwe

Crap!!!!:irked: Thanks for the post by crenipterus svenagalus, I was able to identify and confirm that my bichir have parasite. My bichir have the same exact hairly like creature on the external skin of the bichir. It's more visible on an albino bichir. Can someone tell me if Tank Buddy Parasite Med sold at Walmart will work?

:iagree:

I had the same problem myself with my bichirs. They had those little worms on them. I used Jungle Lab and they cleared up within a full day or so. Haven't had a problem since.

Macrogyrodactylus polypterii
jungle parasite clear with salt and a little higher temps should do the job
