For anyone who works at a pet store. I'm sure you have a lot of annoying customer stories. Well tonight I had a woman give me an attitude.
I was tempted to give her an attitude right back but I didn't. I need my job lol. This woman and her boyfriend came in and they had a 1 and a half gallon tank with them (that they were going to buy.)

I want 4 of these fish ( I forget what kind of fish she wanted. they were freshwater community fish though.)

I said how big of a tank do you have?

Well we're buying this tank ( the 1.5 gallon).

Well you can't keep four fish in a tank that size.

Why can't I keep 4 four fish in here?

Well these fish need a filter.... she interrupts me.

The tank as a filter. (attitude again. acts like i don't know it has a filter in it already.)

I said they also need a heater and it's hard to find a heater for that small of a tank.

You can keep one betta fish in a tank like that though.

Ok I'll take 2 betta fish then. :screwy:

No you can't keep 2 bettas in a tank like that. They will fight with each other.

So your saying you can't sell me fish for this tank? (attitude again) :irked::

I said well that tank isn't suitable for a lot of fish. It's only suitable for 1 fish.

She sighs and says fine. show me a tank/kit for $30 dollars that I can keep 4 fish in.

So I walk over to where we keep some of the aquarium kits. I was going to try and talk her into spending like $60 for a 10 gallon kit. But they saw the 6 and a half gallon tank for like $50.

Can we keep more than one fish in here?

I said well yeah. But before I could explain that they would want to get a heater for it if they wanted freshwater community fish. the woman says to her boyfriend ok pick that up we'll take that one.

The woman goes over to the fish and says ok let's pick out 4 fish and get out of here.

I tell the boyfriend that I recommend to set the tank up first let it run for a day or two and then come back and get fish. He tell's his girlfriend and she give this sigh again and says thanks for your help (some what of a sarcastic way).

I see them leave and they take the 1.5 gallon tank with a betta fish.

I felt like saying to her. If you want the fish to die then sure you can put 4 fish in a one and a half gallon tank. But I didnt' say that lol. Like i said I need my job lol.

How many people here work at a pet store? I'm just curious lol.

Well, unfortunately, sometimes people have to learn lessons by making mistakes.

i have seen that happen before ate my lfs it was sad, this weird guy walks in with his son and asks how many things he can keep in a bowl and the person said what do you have in it he said only 1 5" goldfish... then the guy laughs and tells him that he can only keep maybe one fish in there then the guy walks up to the saltwater section that clearlysays saltwater and says can that fish live in a bowl and he pointed at a lionfish...i could see it in the employees eyes that he was gonna scream at the guy but he kept his cool, and told him he could keep like 3 guppys in with it. and by this point im sittin in the back laughing my a** off:ROFL:it was hilarious

I started this hobby by keeping 6 baby redbellies in a 2.5 gallon.

I eventually got bigger tanks for them thou....

your job is to sell fish...if you want to keep your job. If their fish die, they will come back for more business.

they think you are trying to upsell them...like a typical salesperson.

Don't you love it when the customers come back the next day saying "You're fish are very bad quality, I want a refund"?

Scorponok, So you think I should have sold them 4 fish to keep in a 1.5 gallon tank? With no heater and a crappy filter?

convict94, Lol that story is funny. I've had customers ask if they could keep a clown fish in a fish bowl before.

Be honest like you were. It'll make your store more reputable.

My favorite LFS turns people down all the time, and they do quite well. They'll give in on a sale if the customer is persistent that they want 7 Oscars for a 10g tank, but they'll sign the receipt saying that no refund is possible. Things like this make me go back there every time. "your job is to sell fish" is only half of it. The other half is to care and attempt to educate someone in a civil way, which it sounds like you did.

Good job

without these people dumping stupid money into the industry we would all be paying twice if not more for everything we buy. sucks but we kinda need them.
