annoying customer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I work at North Bay Aquatics and refuse to sell fish to stupid people often and i feel we have a loyal customer base because of our efforts to educate people.I think its better to make money with repeat bussiness and people getting more involved in fish keeping then upgrading and such than to make a few bucks on the one time sale that i know will end in ruin

I find the vast majority of customers quite understanding after you explain things to them. The key is proper explanation, just telling them they can't have X number of fish doesn't work. You have to explain the nitrogen cycle, etc.

I am sicked to be interviewed and go through the screening process at the LSF that I stopped buying from them.

Every time they ask me how big is my tank, I said one thousand in a serious matter, and get a smirk from their facial reaction.

LOL I know how you feel! I used to hand in order forms with plants, marine fish, Afr cichlids, etc and watch the LFS guys cringe because they thought it was all going in the same tank. :)

If you build a relationship with them you won't have to worry about things like that. Maybe the first few times you go in they'll ask the default questions, but if they're knowledgeable and caring that'll end very quickly. I actually have my LFS call me for advice sometimes. It's pretty cool to vicariously help the "average" consumer. :)

For anyone who works at a pet store. I'm sure you have a lot of annoying customer stories. Well tonight I had a woman give me an attitude.
I was tempted to give her an attitude right back but I didn't. I need my job lol. This woman and her boyfriend came in and they had a 1 and a half gallon tank with them (that they were going to buy.)

I want 4 of these fish ( I forget what kind of fish she wanted. they were freshwater community fish though.)

I said how big of a tank do you have?

Well we're buying this tank ( the 1.5 gallon).

Well you can't keep four fish in a tank that size.

Why can't I keep 4 four fish in here?

Well these fish need a filter.... she interrupts me.

The tank as a filter. (attitude again. acts like i don't know it has a filter in it already.)

I said they also need a heater and it's hard to find a heater for that small of a tank.

You can keep one betta fish in a tank like that though.

Ok I'll take 2 betta fish then. :screwy:

No you can't keep 2 bettas in a tank like that. They will fight with each other.

So your saying you can't sell me fish for this tank? (attitude again) :irked::

I said well that tank isn't suitable for a lot of fish. It's only suitable for 1 fish.

She sighs and says fine. show me a tank/kit for $30 dollars that I can keep 4 fish in.

So I walk over to where we keep some of the aquarium kits. I was going to try and talk her into spending like $60 for a 10 gallon kit. But they saw the 6 and a half gallon tank for like $50.

Can we keep more than one fish in here?

I said well yeah. But before I could explain that they would want to get a heater for it if they wanted freshwater community fish. the woman says to her boyfriend ok pick that up we'll take that one.

The woman goes over to the fish and says ok let's pick out 4 fish and get out of here.

I tell the boyfriend that I recommend to set the tank up first let it run for a day or two and then come back and get fish. He tell's his girlfriend and she give this sigh again and says thanks for your help (some what of a sarcastic way).

I see them leave and they take the 1.5 gallon tank with a betta fish.

I felt like saying to her. If you want the fish to die then sure you can put 4 fish in a one and a half gallon tank. But I didnt' say that lol. Like i said I need my job lol.

How many people here work at a pet store? I'm just curious lol.

was this guy your customer? lol

at least you agve good info.
an LFS i worked at - the Aquatics Manager wanted us to sell a 5 gallon kit with 10 1inch goldfish on the day of purchasing. i refused to sell such crap.
and promptly left after my next shift.

i then sent an email to him telling himwhat i thought about his policies and he ignored what i had said and sent a standard response back.
