annoying customer

your job is to sell fish...if you want to keep your job. If their fish die, they will come back for more business.

Wow. So I should be selling people pacu for their small community tanks just so they can eat their fish and then die from lack of space? Maybe I'll get really lucky and the pacu will smash their tank and they'll have to buy a new one!

Anyways, Rallysman is right, you have a duty to inform people of proper care, these are living things not some superfluous gadget...

You shouldn't tell them you can't keep 4 fish in a tank that size...customers are always right. That would offend them as if they don't know anything,, even thou they really don't.

You should tell they you don't recommend or they shouldn't...and the reason is this and that.

If you really hate them, tell them four fish is not enough.

I tell people to get lost all the time. I won't sell piranhas for a 5 gallon tank even if they are the size of a quarter, I won't sell Oscars for a 29. I won't sell Alligator Gar at all. People piss me off daily, that's the worst part about it. Stick to your guns.

Be honest like you were. It'll make your store more reputable.

My favorite LFS turns people down all the time, and they do quite well. They'll give in on a sale if the customer is persistent that they want 7 Oscars for a 10g tank, but they'll sign the receipt saying that no refund is possible. Things like this make me go back there every time. "your job is to sell fish" is only half of it. The other half is to care and attempt to educate someone in a civil way, which it sounds like you did.

Good job

:) I dont work at a Fish/Pet store but i have been working in retail for the past 5 years and will agree that most of the general public are rude, ignorant, and persistant pains in the BUTT! lol

It's a hard thing deciding between selling something you think is a bad idea or not. I've kept plenty of fish with other fish that were "not recommended".

Scorponok, I just don't get you at all. That's all i'm gonna say.

Thanks for the support guys. These are the times where I don't like working with people. The more I work with people the more i like animals lol.

I meant to say customers are always right...and it's your job to prove them otherwise, after the fact.

It's not our job to tell them "I told you so", it's our job to advise them as to the correct care of the animals they are buying before they neglect/kill them.

I got out of retail after 5 years of being in it. 90% people are just ignorant, 10% are stupid. You can fix ignorant, but you cant fix stupid. The only thing you can do with stupid customers is cover your ass (document on their proof that you explained that it's a no return policy).
