It's a book about the discovery of the Coelacanth in the Comoros. Fishermen there routinely fish very deep waters. They even have a program now to return Coelacanth to the deep, but I have reservations on the survival rate.

dang just the other day i learned in science class that there are only about 300 or so left in the sea. now only 299

and how exactly would anyone know that? Im thinking there is a lot more then we estimate. Remember, it wasnt that long ago we were certain they were all gone.

I think there are more than that, and I think there are populations undiscovered. I do think that there are still a relatively small amount left, and I'd like to see deep sea fishing banned in those areas where populations are known to exist, even if it means subsidizing local fisheries to keep them from destroying what's left.

I read a couple articles about that shark being caught off the coast of Japan, and a few things struck me as interesting.

First off, it is usually a deep sea shark, so for it to be spotted swimming so close to the surface, means that it was sick and dying. The video of the shark swimming (still in the wild) showed that there was obviously something wrong with the shark.

The Japanese ichthyologists who caught it, took it to the aquarium for observation which might teach them more about the species of shark. The more we know about a species, the better chance it has at being conserved.

It's not like fishermen have gone out to catch them intentionally... Bottom line, why would they want to catch something that they can't eat. Coelacanth habitat is cold, deep sea, so this one got to be sick to come up and get caught in net

We know so little about the sea.. As much as we know something like 90 ish % is unexplored. Even on dry land we have new species being discovered every few years.

Read this book, it's excellent. It describes the fishing techniques of the locals of the Comoros Islands, and how they unintentionally catch the Coelacanths while long line fishing the bottom.

unfortunately, as a culture, or a race. When a race or culture does not learn to manage its environment, conserve animals, especially animals such as this! so rare! it really tells you of the primitive likeness of their race or culture towards apes more than human that can think with a neo cortex.
like these people, indonesian, africans, south east asians and chinese people. are very primitive in that regard. not yet reached a maturity.
