I've been looking into a lot about DE, however, I have not notice/read (Maybe just me) that it might be caused by our lighting system where it's too bright for our Arowanas to look up, so they must look down to prevent the glare that's IN THEIR FACE. I am raising a couple of baby Arowanas in my 150 gallon for a while with very dim lighting to see if this theory prevents DE or not. What do you think? If this has been discussed before, then, oops. I'm still going to go with lower lighting for my Aro tank.

bro, it's not the light... i've kept my silver aro (w/ DE) in a tank for 4 months without lighting but still had DE. then there are silver arowana keepers here that has lighting but their aros never had DE.

Even if you did dim the lighting, there are several other opinions on why aro get DE. Without eliminating those possibilities from the mix, you still won't have an explanation to the DE once your aros develop it.

i agree, to properly test this you would need to have multipul tanks with and without tankmates, substrate...strong light, soft light...no jumping from any of them....one tank high, one low...there might be a few more, and all that is just to prove or disprove the looking up or down idea...also that doesn't take into effect the genetics theroy...witch i beleve plays a large part along with head trama(head trama being mostly responsible) as the main cause of de...imo.....

on another note though i haven't seen many pics of aros with egg sacks, but they knida look like baby blacks, i could be wrong...if they are blacks then this test is pointless as blacks rarly get de anyways....

I think you installed your Fluval X05 canister filter incorrectly...... I'm sure anyone who owns one can tell you the same.

BTW Awesome Aros :headbang2

to do a test, you'll need to have alot, i mean alot of aros.. and there are many theories why aros get DE. Those look like silvers are they not? Silvers are prone to DE as most of the adult ones i've seen has them. if you want to reduce the chance of DE, then just go with blacks instead of silvers. i dont know too much about DE on asians and others though.

oh and i dont think lighting has much to do with DE, but that's just my opinion and i could be wrong.

I am a firm believer that drop eye is caused by diet more than anything else. Many people think that the reflection on the base of the tank causes them to look down. This is not true as the arowana does not see this reflection due to refraction in the water; it is only yourself that will see the reflection because you are not in the water.

To back up my theory, as you can see in the below video fatty deposits are being removed from behind the arowana's eye sockets caused by a bad diet of probably mamallian meat.
