another dissapointing day at petsmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have we ever had a "look how clean the tanks are, how healthy the fish are and how knowledgeable and courteous the employes are" thread about a chain? i think the answer is no. One of my best friends works part time at a pet supplies plus, he's not there for the fish he's there for the money, but he does know about fish, his problem is that every month he is given a medication budget and after that money is spent he cant treat any fish that come in with ich, he tries his best though putting infected fish in a separate tank with heat and salt, but he cant treat the whole system. So before you curse him out just take a second and ask why, why arnt they being treated? the answer may surprise you.

Not all lfs' are bad; you just hear about the ones that have things wrong when someone comes on here and whines about it.
The Petcos and Petsmarts where I live are all great. Petland is the only one I don't go to,and that's because they sell dogs. As far as I know, they keep their fish and their dogs in a healthy and safe manner,I just don't like the idea of dogs being sold in a store.

yea so do i and many others here, but i wont be there for life. the best bet is get college age students who just need a job during that time and know a fair amount. because i don't believe even boggy will be at his store long term (a career of it)

another former LFS worker here. I worked my way up to assistant manager while going through university.

learned more in a few years with 200 tanks (including 1500g shark tank) than I would in a lifetime of keeping a few tanks at home.

thats the beauty of working at a big LFS. you get to look after hundreds of species and types of fish/corals/inverts that you would otherwise never be able to at home (unless you have 200 tanks and a 1500g shark tank in your basement lol)

its true - good help is hard to find because the job is generally low paying.

what they really must look for is enthusiasm.

if you have enthusiasm, you will learn so much so fast, and be a better hobbyist because of it.

and you help your customers to become successful too.
which keeps them coming back.

you can't keep customers buying stuff in your store if their fish are all dead..

he's claiming to be an advocate for FISH RIGHTS. what about HUMAN RIGHTS? the kid who works at that store does not deserve to be abused like that. why would a grown man go to a store and pick on a kid? i guess picking on kids makes him feel masculine.

i agree, i even have an example. i lady who works at my lfs didn't know a thing about fish when she started. literally idn't know a tetra from a cichlid. the woman now know scientific names of cichlids, especially africans that i know nothing about. it's a cool transformation to watch..

you learn so much working in a store from first hand experience that those reading books will never quite get. and as you said you work with near limitless stock in a store situation.

All of the Petsmarts and Petcos by me are 100% better than Wal-Mart.

It's simply not the business model of Petsmart or Petco to recruit and retain people with a lot of fish expertise. And the staffing model doesn't support the kind of in-depth help that especially beginning fishkeepers need to be successful. That said, I've seldom found folks who work in either of these stores that don't know a little....or at least mean well.

It's by pure happenstance that anyone knows the slightest at Wal-Mart about fish or aquariums. And that's by design of Wal-Mart's corporate office as a way of minimizing staffing costs.

If more LFS would step up their game (provide a friendly, semi-sanitary environment and competitive prices)...as well as be capitalized enough to weather the recession, I think more people would shift their business from "marts". Or maybe not.

I wanna work in an lfs when im able to drive to one, part because i wanna help people and part because i want to learn and get experienced with different kinds of fish.
Then theres the benefit of discounts..
