The Real Norcal
so my aro has hit about 12" and is developing DE in his right eye only.
I'm a little bit bummed out but I knew there was a likelyhood of this happening so I cant be too bummed oput about it.

The thing I'm wondering about though is the fact that my arowana swims slanted at an angle, leaning toward the side with the drop eye,and it looks kinda lame, makes me wish he would just get DE in the other eye to even it out LOL (yeah joking, joking)

has anyone else ever had this happen?will it go away?I know its most likely not a risk to his health in any way but as I mentioned before it looks pretty lame.

The drop eye I dont mind so much,it bugs me but most people who look at my tank dont notice it,they figure he's just loooking down alot or something, but the swimming around leaning to one side is a bit more noticable, and also fairly annoying. If it cant be helped then it cant be helped and I'll just live with it but I thought I might get your guys thoughts on the matter, weather it be a possible solution or just an attempt at making me not be so ashamed of my almost sideways swimming aro.

PS: I'm 95% sure its the drop eye thats causing him to swim funny,he started when the drop eye started,he leans toward the side with the DE,and he still eats fine, aside from not being able to really notice when I'm holding his food at the surface,I now have to drop it in the water close to his face.

im 100% certain that your fishes swimming at an angle has nothing to do with its drop eye.

well,it would take more than that to convince me,to be honest.like I said he started when the DE started to develope, and he started leaning toward the side with the DE,and the worse the DE got the more he leaned in that direction.
You could be correct, dont get me wrong, but its gonna take more than just saying your sure thats not it to convince me....but it would help if you added at least one idea that you think it could be...

ok... a real odd idea on DE.....

what if DE is a natural way for the aro to improve his downward vision ????

just a weird thought.........:screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

I was sort of thinking the same thing myself? I wonder if aros with owners who feed them feeders (mid water) or things that sink (like earth worms) had a higher percentage rate of drop eye. A fish's mouth/head-shape tells you what it's eating habbits are... And aros are built for top water... or even jumping out of the water... Maybe it's just from the aros looking down to much.

Back to the subject, fish with drop eye usually live normal lifes as long as they are cared for... Just doesn't look so hot. And I've seen vids on youtube of surgery on some asian arow and it was fine... I would absolutely not reccomend doing that at home, but someone got it to work. And for the swimming towards one side, I've never heard of that being caused by DE

that doesnt mean that they feed EXCLUSIVELY from the surface and above the water, arowana mostly feed from the top and middle water column and even the bottom, what other advantages would you have as a surface dweller?.....a birds eye view of what to eat ;)

mine swims funny because of drop eye. but he has it in both eyes. sometimes he can't see his food lol. when it sinks tho, BAM.
