I've never seen my fahaka puff. He's close to 12" now & 10 years old, so I doubt I ever will.

Wow, filbert is only 12" long??? is this including tail??? coz i would have thought after all these years he would be a lot longer than 12"...

Yeah, me to. Of course, I include the tail. ;) It could be that he is only in a 125g, I'd like to think not though. We have a lot of discussions at TPF about different sub-species of the same fish. Filbert doesn't have the bright, maroon stripes some fahakas have. Those fish seem to grow huge. His stripes are grayer & he's more mottled on his back.

^ Thats a very interesting theory... i'm going to start keeping an eye out for different fahaka's to see if they really vary much in size or not...

hm...sounds actually kinda similar to mine. the stripes aren't maroon but rather most of the time are much darker, sometimes appearing fully black. That was one of the things I liked about him. The other was of course that he was the only fahaka the lfs had. LOL

He's done great so far but hasn't really grown as much as I was expecting. He's in a 55 gallon for now but is only 4" tops. I think I've properly kept up with water quality due to growth rates of fish in my other tanks but I'm playing around now with a sort of pseudo drip system to hopefully encourage even faster growth.

I certainly wouldn't mind if he maxed at 12" so long as he gets to at least that size. He's a voracious eater gulping down red wrigglers, mini crabs, bloodworms, snails etc until his belly is nice and plumpy. :)
