Looked dead to me too I'm glad he is active. It looks just like my fish when it was 2"-2.5" long just grey in color with barbels about as long as the fish or longer(mine were longer than the body and tail) and a nice long streamer and at 3.5"-4.5" it will develop spots that will eventually will disappear around 16"-20" I believe well at least according to my "mystery fish" at 15" I believe within 6 months to a year the spots will be gone. Is your fish eating yet?

So, are you saying it's the same fish as yours, just much smaller?

So exoticfishguy, do you know what it is and this is a 'guess what's in the bag' type thing or are you really confused as to the ID? I'm not trying to flame, I'm legitimately curious. I couldn't tell for sure from the OP. :)

Looks similar. Who knows? I thought I knew but everyone seems to attempt to prove different. It does look similar to my fish as a juvie. Only time can tell. Food, high oxygen, power heads, frequent WC schedule will ensure a fast metabolism and healthy fish. Good luck!

I just want to see who is best at identifying the fish.

I do know what it is though...

Good stuff, I figured you did.

It really looks like a Dourada to me though. Even if I'm wrong, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :lol2:

If it's none of the above, it must be platynemum? I had a 7" that was eaten, but had a 50/50 type coloration, dark on the top. This coloration fades with age to all white/silver

That seems to be the logical conclusion, but it looks way to stocky to be a platynemum. I think the only other type that hasn't been mentioned specifically is filamentosum...

Still stubbornly sticking by Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii/paraense! :D

My initial thought toward its ID was flavicans as well.

My dead platynemum for reference
