Another Project...

Oh that's easy! Just get a tiny one, transplant it into a small flower pot, let it recover for a year or two, then get a wide, shallow pot and plant it in that after cutting the roots off that are growing down. The trick is to keep the roots from going down. You want then to Grow wide, not deep. You'll have to repot the tree every year or two and trim the roots each time. And of course keep the foliage under control.

Fertilize as needed and water often. Lol. Pretty straight forward. Post pics here when you get one.

And you're the first to say pear tree on the mystery one. We should all place bets. Lol.

A few things I would like to add:
1. The tree in question is definately not a popple(spelling)? But it is a related species.
2. Before the tree is "finished" (they never really are) the best thing to pot them in are pots for pond plants, because they let the air and water pass best.
I think that was it for now :D

I had not heard of planting them in pots for pond plants - Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out. You keep bonsai? Where be dem pics??

Nice collection you got going. I would love to have some bonsai trees one day!

Why thank you!

Why not start now? lol. I just went out and found some tiny saplings growing in somebody's yard and was like, "Hey, lemme take care of those for you."

So. Woke up this morning and this little guy was all crinkly like he was drying out. It rained last night and they were all just fertilized a week or so ago.

So I'm thinking, what could be your problem? So I lifted it out of the pot and holy roots, Batman!! Guess I need to repot it more often than I thought.

He's soaking now in a bucket of water in his new soil. I'll let him sit for 20 mins and then it's back to the picnic table with him.

Been awhile....

My dad's been building a storage shed on a piece of land he and his neighbor went halvsies on years ago so I was over there yesterday and stole some trees. They are all oak. The plot is littered with them.

These guys need their own pots but I didn't have any. Gotta get some. I'll let em settle for prolly the winter before I get worried about repotting them.

Here's a couple that were growing off of an existing root. Of course, I had no idea until they were dug up. I figured that it would be a neat display if they made it.

And here's an update on the other 4:

I don't know what to make of the oak losing its leaves. And the blue cup is the crab apple... I don't know whether to get worried until spring or not. I really don't have any luck gettin seeds to sprout anyway. It was worth a shot though...

Oh.... And the privet's dead. Not happy...

Ah, I definately need an oak, too. Problem is they are such slow growers it takes decades to make decent bonsai out of them. At the moment I'm growing some Willow for bonsai :)
