:swear:

OK, my 5 gallon nano has been doing great. The live rock has lots of pink, purple and green algae, tiny feather dusters, and sponges. I even spotted some teeney tiny starfish digging around in the sand. So, I drove the 30 miles to my LFS to get some grape calpura, hermits, and a bee snail.

As I was waiting for my 3 blue legged hermits to be baged up an employee was un-packing a box of star fish. She cut open the shipping bags, reached in, and PICKED UP the star fish and dropped them in the tank! WTF!!! She even held a red sea star up, turned it around in her hand, and poked it! The owner was the one bagging my hermits, and he never said a word!

Now, I was thinking about getting a small red sea star next month (if everything goes OK with the new livestock), along with a pin cushion urchin, but NO WAY in heck am I buying them from my LFS!

Good point. You do want to watch out for careless behavior.

some lfs don't care. is it a chain store?

wow, ok the service and some of the staff might be ****, but hey thats cool.
There arent many LF near me which stock salt tank stuff like that, inverts etc.
we mainly have clownfish and "dory" :s

doesn't sound like best practice to me. i'd be retiscent to buy any more stuff except food and gear from a shop like that.

Its a unfortunate practice very sedom will a store thats in bussiness taks the time (money) to train its employees or for that matter replace them with some one who cares and is knowledgeable this would require paying more then the cost of living ,so what happens is the owner turns a blind eye and puts any losses down as doa either obsorbs it or on his next shippment gets a credit from the exporter .
They are some speciality stores left that have very high cost invested in there stock so the owners get involved and make sure the care is there that is needed .
There's a reef and salt store that i visit just to veiw the corals in the tanks amazing place all the tanks are stainless ponds no glass to be found and probably very low losses but it's pricey.
The best thing to do is shop around find the single stores and boycott mega stores untill they start treating the stock like they should be.

when i useualy got salt i new when they got there shipment so i would go there before that happened my lfs does the same thing

I already boycott one place here it just sux b/c they got best cichlid selection none the less I will NOT ever go there. I despise them. Anyways I would just go look for another saltwater place. Its a shame that people just dont care.

This was not a chain store, it's a "mom and pop".

The owner is the manager, he was like 2 feet away when this girl was poking the starfish. What she did is just one of many reasons I get my livestock on-line. But, because this is my first try at a saltwater tank I didn't want to pay the $30 or so it would cost to get my hermits, snail, and algae shipped (total cost for all at the LFS was $12.)

I don't like to shop there, the only other store that sells fish and supplies with-in an hours drive of my house is Wal-Mart (ICK!). I do get my salt mix, gravel and dog food from my LFS, but again that's only because I don't want to pay shipping on these heavy items.
