Another sick ray thread........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
proper wattage and flow a uv is very effective at removing bacteria and parasites algea etc.... so its not the quick cure but it will help you along with salting the hell out of your system and lots and lots of massive water changes

I would feel alittle bit better if I knew more about the spot..... Might change my opinion on things a little if it was something that I had NO control over..... Or contribute to in any way. That's the part that sucks. The whole feeling like I don't know what I'm doing with these animals and the fact that the ones I have had and have had great luck with are just a lucky fluke. I really feel like I messed up by seing it eat for a few days and writing it off as good to go.......

But right now I view it as the plague and I'm going to get home to all my rays dead.

looks like Costia infection

Sorry I don't have better insight.. treating rays is not something I am good with. However, I was worried about a bacterial infection on my newly purchased retics and had good luck using Triple Sulfa as a treatment.. no ill side effects.

Also, if your looking for a cheap/quick UV sterilizer, PetSmart now sells a powerhead/UV sterilizer rated for a couple hundred gallons.. Its a single unit with a powerhead and uv sterilizer all enclosed in a casing, reminds me of a Fluval4 powerhead.. it runs everything internally, so no plumbing needed. It only costs $60, too, amazingly.. might check it out for a quick helper.

Oh, and don't feel bad.. I really like this variations of 'King royal double back marble motoro" but It looks like about 80% of them die from fungus/bacterial or other health issues.. I think African_Fever had problems with them, as so did some other people.. could be whoever the exporter is has bad quality control or maintenance procedures, or the collection zone is far away from the exporter so the moped trip through the jungle might be lengthier than other rays, or the importers could just treat them like they are super-hardy Motoros as most are, and not give them the special attention they deserve.. hell.. it could be 1 dude along the Orinico collecting all these special marble rays from a single location, and not having a clue about how to transport them.. they shove them in tiny little buckets and treat them like teacups, so they are more stressed out before you even get them.

I have a few pics of the male that passed. He had a strange red blotch on him belly.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

Not sure about the strange red blotch.. but you can definitely see where the bacteria infection has really sloughed off the pigmentation from around the outside edge of the disc margin.. this is a good early sign of a bacterial issue. This one guy who used to own a LFS here and import with Dr. Ross says that that 'Super Sulfa' was the magical cure for rays and mystery infections.. Aquatronics doesn't produce it anymore but API makes a Triple Sulfa that I used on my reticulata..

But Honestly, whatever treatment you go with is up to you and I don't think anyone out there is going to have a sure fire answer for you, as not alot of study/results have been done with ray medications.. I would find 1 method that seems to make the most sense through research and reasoning, and stick with it.. if it doesn't work, and the rays are still alive, try a new method.

I think Nic's combo of maracyn and maracyn 2 is good, as most would have assumed these to be stressful to rays.. but if they are not, they are beneficial in tandem because they treat both gram positive and gram negative bacterias.

Maracyn is rediculous in terms of treating a pond. Hell it was gonna be over $100 just to treat a 125.

There are many meds I've looked into that treath both gram - and + that are a lot more cost effective....... Like Furanase....... But if it's not as strong then I guess it's not as cost effective. This is my problem too.... I have little to zero experience with meds..... So I don't know what works. I've been staring at meds since Tuesday and it's pretty frustrating. It is HOWEVER VERY much a relief to know that I AM in fact dealing with a Bacterial infection. I think that makes all this a little easier.

I'm not looking for a step by step here's what you need to fix it procedure. I just don't want to go out a blow a boatload of cash cause I'm under the wrong impression......

The red spot looked odd to me...... That is what I was really curious about... If no one knows or it is a positive ID as being costia??

And DO parasites LEAD to a bacterial infection or are they 2 totally different unrelated issues?

Triple Sulfa is almost twice the price of the Furanase. Both have different active ingredients. Gut instinct is if Ross says Sulfa then that should be the choice if it's 5 times the price.

Next question....... SALT. Everyone uses Koshar right? But there is plain canning and pickling salt nothing added for a lot less than even koshar. Is there a reason people use the more expensive koshar salt?

Some medications are rendered useless when exposed to UV light, especially antibiotics. UV light should beturned off while medicating the tank. Also, remove all carbon.

I didn't know that! Thanks for the info!

I use the big blue bags of morton's water softener salt from wal-mart.. 50 lbs is about $4..

and who knows if 'in fact' it is a bacterial infection? could be a secondary issue.. the fungus could be a secondary issue I guess.. alot of people have told me that rays get bacterial issues easily, often from poor substrate maintenance(not your issue) .. and thats a good question if internal parasites could be the primary with bacterial being the primary, but I would guess that you would have eating/wasting issues .. the only thing would be supressed immune system from stress or lack of nutrition from the parasites.

Anyways just tossing out thoughts... battle on my friend

furanase is similier to furan2 wich i used on ray tank and ray died... now ray was very sick so i can not say med was direct cause but i cant say it was not....

i use kosher cause its a 2 minute drive to the store and costs me between 1.50 and 200 per 3 lbs.... miles and others keep mentioning a blue bag at walmart that one of these days ill buy...
