Ironically..in light of the fertility questions being discussed..the midevil and syn x parrot spawned. Pics soon.

You'd need to backcross to both parent species, keep several nice fry from both spawns. What your after is a 75% texas x 25% jag male, and a 25% texas x 75% jag female. If there were problems at 62% fry you'd have the 75% fry as a fall back. I do not think that will be the case though.

Surprisingly the male is one of the best dad's I've ever seen. Very involved with helping her fan the eggs, fanning in unison with her, spelling her so she could rest/eat..and now moving the wrigglers from the spawn site..so amazingly gentle. It's like he's on morphine; p

Your not the first person to ask me how I get whichever fish to breed..I do lots of water changes, I use new life spectrum, I make sure the pair in question has more than enough tank space...no tankmates if they are pair bonded. If they are not pair bonded I place other males and females in the tank with them, taking care to use fish that are less dominant than either of the two I want to mate. This almost always will make them bond, it usually takes 1-3 days and they'll be pairing up and driving the other fish off. If it isn't working change the rotation, for instance if your intended male is going after the wrong girl take her out, if the male hasn't been acting too studly give him smaller males to chase, etc. If the male sees his intended mate as the most dom female he will automatically want her and vice versa, the female almost always wants the most dom male in the group. I've had females go from beating the tar out of a smaller male to accepting his every advance in as little as 12 hours. If they just don't seem to be bonding I place them in diff tanks for a while and try later. Of course I do have many failed attempts..some fish just don't like each other.
Mature breeders, good water parameters, high quality feed, including tilapia and market shrimp. And knowing cichlid behaviour to some extent..thats my secret.

p.s. looks like theres a ton of sb fry in this batch...it's weird, there appears to be a LOT more sb fry than I would have expected, it will be interesting to watch these guys develop.
