Another "will my floor support" question, 265 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly, I think you're pressing your luck with having a 265 upstairs. Without having additional floor supports in the garage, I would say it is a no go. You have to think about the structural integrity of houses and what 200lbs per square foot could do to the house. I had a 75G upstairs and decided it wasn't worth the risk to go bigger based on the particulars of my floor.

What thickness are the joists and how far apart?

Doubling up floor joist's is probably the easiest approach, if needed, and assuming the supporting walls are brick and mortar. It is an easy job in all honesty. Id put it on the loadf bearing wall and put the 125 or smaller tank on the other side, but im paranoid.

The load bearing wall is a cavity brick wall i take it?

Tank placement tight against the wall, i.e across multiple joists where they join the wall will be less strain per joist and is the main factor.

The more joists it lies across the better. Simply devide the total weight of the tank and contents by the number of joists it will lie across, check that number against the 'load allowance' of the joists fitted. Should be easy to figure whether you need more joists. no need for sheathing ply if you do it this way.

edited to make more sense :P

What are the dimensions of the 265g tank? An eight foot tank will work much better then a 6 foot tank. Of coarse this is dependant of proper placement in regards to the floor joists.

It is an eight foot tank. Im going to check out the floor joist out sometime in the next few days.. I appreciate all the help guys. Its just had to say what Im going to do for sure. Ive heard stories of guys having 300 upstairs no problem. Then Ive heard stories about 150's that cracked a joist. But at least I haven't heard of any stories about a tank falling through the floor :) and if you have one of those stories keep in to yourself hahaha :)

I say go for it!

If it causes structural damage, give your home insurance company a link to this thread. I'd like to see their faces!

Is it a Perfecto 265? If so, it should be 7ft x 2ft x 2.5ft.

scratch that, bobby your right its a 7 footer. Im really leaning towards doing it but I will probably brace the floor better. How would you suggest doing that? just double boarding all the floor joists?
