Anti virus programs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
AVG free is an ok... program to use if your computer is not infected, it is very basic and doesnt include alot of options such as detecting of more complicated things such as rootkits and some worms, AVG also misses alot of viruses in its scans and protection so trying to clean up an infected computer with AVG free is useless. However if you would like mediocre protection and do not want to spend money avg free is right for you.
I personally use ESET Smart Security 4, it is somewhat expensive but I assure you you get what you pay for, it creates backup images of your computer, scans automatically, scans all incoming files, it has a great firewall ect... In my 6 months with eset i have yet to get a single infection on my computer, eset takes care of it all www.eset.com you can try it out for 30days for free if you want
btw it also utilizes very low system resources which means that it doesnt lag your computer at all and you dont notice any difference in speed when a scan is going on. eset has never miseed a in the wild virus in its existance while AVG has missed over 700
compare for yourself http://www.eset.com/products/compare-NOD32-vs-competition.php?pm=1 eset also utilises smart sense which basically can sense if something is a variation of a virus that has not been recorded yet
if you can afford it get the best :)

If you think you are already infected, try Malwarebytes- download at
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

I work on a call in IT helpdesk and we use this thing a lot for trojans and other viruses- works great and is free (may be a trial but we remove it when done)
At home I use Norton Internet Security- will not clean up an already infected machine but I like it. It is faster than the old versions and we have not had a single virus issue even with doing downloads- no hacks either. Nice thing is it comes with 3 license per CD- can cover all my home machines for $60 a year.

How can some of these anti security software programs be free... i never did understand why some would be free and some very expensive..there must be some quality difference between them to keep your pc safe........ does anyone know ? I always thought also you get what you pay for...

Look at it as how you used to have to pay for an AOL email, but you could get yahoo for free...Basically, you are creating your name. It's like google. Google is maaaaad free. You get a free search engine, numerous widgets and tools, email, chat, now even a web browser! So why free? Because I can guarantee you, sometime in your day you will say (or hear someone say) oh, I will just google that later.

THAT is what they are creating. And as such, people pay big bucks to be a part of google.

Now here is a real brain twister. Should we have anti-trust laws in place to protect dogpile, or yahoo, or msn search, from google? They are all free....so is google a monopoly?

yes there is a quality difference and you do get what you pay for. if you have a problem with a virus that cant be deleted by the security suite but is quarantined so it cant do any harm the programs you pay for get back to you with help, all the help you could need. bullguard does this and they try to reply withing the hour but they warn of a 24hr window, ive never waited more than 20mins for help.
all the internet security suites have failings, bullguard isnt so good at rootkits. norton eats your system resources and has a shabby anti-malware system and kapersky is poorer at spyware (if i remember right).

free programs are great too though and you can be very well protected by a combination of free ones but you dont have anywhere near the amount of support a pay version gets you if you have a problem.
alot of free software doesnt run constantly in the background like you internet security packages, anti-malwarebytes is an example. the free one is a deliberate scan only program but the pay version runs constantly like your security software.
getting the free ones can be a problem too, some places you download from are less than trustworthy and you download rootkits and other stubborn viruses. the very reason i dont use free ones, just downloading them can cause problems.

very good info and i thank you both for sharing... i understand alot more ...
