There is a substance ant keepers paint around the inside of the rim of the tank that ants apparently are unable to or will not cross.
Yes. If you watch all the videos in the link it explains how he set up the tank and how he prevents the ants from getting out.
I don't think I will ever keep ants but I have subscribed to the antscanada channel as his videos are fascinating. I never realised just how complex and intelligent ants are.

It came as a recommended video one day on YouTube. I clicked, watched about 5 videos and subscribed. His enthusiasm and building of a drama in his colonies is enjoyable.

I love the Ants Canada channel and the set up.
Having said that, I would not put ants in a tank. I struggle enough with them living on a subtropical island. Don't need an extra lot to worry about.

i do like the idea of having a small insect the fish can predate on a lot. I wonder what kinds of insects could possibilities?

I think the noise of the crickets amplified by being in a tank could be quite deafening in a closed room.
Edible insects that can work as food: tomato hornworms, cicadas and grasshoppers(especially tree crickets),edible moths (would need a well screened top portion) and I'm sure there's plenty of others.
