Do they need something to chew on though? Are they destructive? I been thinking about getting one, but I worry they may chew onto things I dont want them to.
I've had Ancistrus sp. for four years. No, I have not noticed them munching on woods which the Panaque are more capable of doing so, so you'll be fine. Even if they do, it'd still be minimal damage. Just as a warning for heavily planted tanks, if you cannot feed them veggies or that they are not satisfied with their diet, they wil certainly eat your plants especially those with soft foliage.;)

Ok, because I got a log, but its fake. Just wanted to make sure that it wouldnt try to eat it if real wood wasnt present. But these are the plecos who do the best algae eating job right?

Besides Panaque maccus and Sturisoma panamense, yes. Might want to look on snails such as ramshorns and nerites.

Otocinclus or Bristlenose Plecos would be your best algae eaters for a small tank. They're the best algae eaters, IMO and the Chinese Algae Eater will eventually stop eating algae and get aggressive. Gold Nuggets look nice, but aren't the greatest algae eaters.

golden sucking cats or the silver ones work wonders with algae never had a prob with them harassing other fish however my golden one liked the slime coat on my molly so i wouldnt recomend them with slow moving gold fish or mollies

I don't know all of the different kinds, but I do know that they can kill wide bodied and slow moving fish. I discovered one sucking on the side of another fish in one of my tanks. Needless to say, I wisked that sucker right out of the tank. I do have a well loved Chinese Aleae Eater in with my pond minnows though and he is one of my favorite fish.
