You can call people dumb and laugh all you want but a hybrid is not a cichlid. Please tell me the scientific name of your flowerhorn and it's classification. Blood parrots have been around forever, what is there scientific name and classification? Please give a uniform discription of what flowerhorns look like for classification?

All humans are homo sapiens. Any two breeding homo sapiens produces a homo sapiens. An example is an Cryptoheros sajica crossed with an cryptoheros mrynae. What exactly would that result in. It would be the equivelant of you mating with a neanderthalensis. Or better yet why not cross genus like most flowerhorns are. That would be the equilivent of you mating with a gorilla. Sound the same as several human races mating?

Scientific names reveal genus and species. Cichlids are any and all animals belonging to the family Cichlidae, which would have no bearing on their scientific name.

For example, if you crossed a Homo sapien with a gorilla (if that were possible), the result would still be a hominid, from the family Homonidae, to which both humans and gorillas belong.

You reach this hybrid by crossing cichlids. Therefore they are a cichlid hybrid.
Simple and logical. Only common sense right?

Never heard a FH breed with a goldfish or guppie before.

according to the technical description of a cichlid , a cichlid hybrid is still a cichlid .
there , now that i contributed to the derail , i'll put my 2 cents on the original topic .
although i still keep a fh , i can understand why you might want to explore natural cichlids . they are extremely diverse , and usually much cheaper for a nice specimen . however ,now that i see how much $ people spend on p-bass and rare plecos , a nice fh doesn't seem so expensive ...
i surely appreciate a beautiful purebreed as much as a beautiful hybrid . beauty is beauty . i guess i could say i go through phases of which i prefer ...

are you kidding?

Id rather have a cat turd in a bowl than that hideous looking thing.

I really dont understand the whole fascination with Koks that some of you have.

I suspect it's a bit like a guy buying a corvette... Compensating for something? :naughty:

It's a shame how someone works hard to earn what they have and there's some haters or ones like you wanna take that away from them by saying some cheap comments like such. So you dont want a Corvette?

Everyone have their own minds. Never can all be pleased. One must have big kok, one must have no kok! We are different. Im easy. I just like a nice fish.

If one got big strong muscles, a hater says he's compensating for something. If one got a nice car, a hater say he's compensating for something..
Just negative haters say things like that so they can feel better about themselves..

From now on, if you pay attention, only jealous ppl say things like that, They say that because they dont have it.

That's crap. Like the car, maybe they just like what they see. I know I love my Corvette. I don't keep Flowerhorns, but I understand the passion people have for what they keep in their tank. I'd love to photograph one someday.

Like I've said many times. Keep what you like and take good care of them. That's what really matters.

You have always brought interesting discussion to the table, pal. Once again you hit the nail on the head. It's all good. Invest in the things that make you happy.

No offense taken. This is just a forum discussion and people will have different opinions and feelings or certain topics.

Good point. This pretty much follows what Mo said. I guess scientifically they would still fall in the same family. I think my perception of them is just different because they are man made and the not the product of evolution or wild crossing. I tend to look at flowerhorns as something completely different. But perception is not always reality.

I get jgentry's point perfectly. While I also feel that hybrid cichlids are definitely still in the cichlid family, the tough part is still calling a cichlid if you can't put a scientific name on it.

Guy 1- Yeah, this flowerhorn is definitely a cichlid.
Guy2- Oh, what species?
Guy 1- Well.....
