Any larger crayfish available in the US?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've gotten as far as the research institute stating they'd be willing to ship me 3 or 4 unsexed juvie crays for $3,000.00 US once I receive permission from the crown. I've been trying to get that permission for nearly 6 years. The application process has been quick to ask for additional money and slow on producing positive results.

I think it's ridiculous that all of this time has gone by and they have not come to a decision as to whether or not to give you permission to have the crayfish.

Good ol' California. We have crawdads everywhere. No idea what sepecies, but they get pretty big and are very hardy. Is there a market?

i have 2 in my 300 tropical and I'm about to pull them out. Even at 4" they are poaching sleeping fish at night. One is red, one is blue. Nice thick claws.

I'm going to say that what you have is a Signal Crayfish (leniusculus). They are found throughout the state in clean water rivers and streams. You are correct, they are very hardy. Too hardy in fact. They are originally from the Pacific Northwest. They have been exported internationally, as well as domestically. They are likely the reason the Sooty Crayfish is extinct, and the reason the Shasta Crayfish is endangered, as well as the reason the European Nobel cray is a species of concern (kind of an interesting story there, but I don't feel like writing it, do a little research on someones "good idea" to supplement Euro crays with Signals, if you want a good read). They make a nice tank addition. I am kind of surprised they can catch your cichlids. Mine got fairly beat up by convicts and jack dempsys. What water shed did you find this one in? Post a pick of the blue one, I would like to see that.
