Like the title of the thread says, I want a lobster of some sort. I'm thinking a Blue Knight Lobster, as they have small claws and grow up to the same size as an Oscar.

So what really works? Obviously the Invertebrate needs to be able to defend its self, but I don't want it to be aggressive to the point of trying to eat my Oscars.

I need a scavenger and do not want a cat fish... so are Freshwater Invertebrates the way to go? Also, who has one with an Oscar? I'm really thinking a Blue Knight would work, but again, ask MFK 1st.

not sure about the type your asking but i kept like a 3in blue crayfish i got from the lfs in with my 2 oscars when they were about 6in each and he did great until he molted, then while he was still soft and vulnerable they ate off all his legs. so im thinking that the lobster thing probably isnt going to work unless he has an amazing hiding spot that he knows to go to when he molts, he will get attacked while defenseless

Your talking about a 3" vs 2 6" Oscars... I wouldn't have thought that would work even before molting. I'm talking about 6" or larger lobster with 6" or larger Oscars. A Blue Knight Lobster gets up to 1 foot in length, just like a Red Lobster or a White Ghost Lobster. Since Oscars get to about a foot as well, I'm hoping that a Molting Lobster could still defend its self at least a little.

Question about molting, do the lobsters retain their claws during such?

i wouldnt do it imo. when the lobster gets a hold of the oscar....think about it, them claws !

The ones I mentioned are too slow to attack a large fish... plus they have small claws, so they cant get ahold of one even if they wanted to.

This is a Blue Knight Lobster... notice the small claws.

This is a freshwater Red Lobster, again, claw size.

yeah true, mine was a lot smaller than the Os, but pretty much all invertebrates are absolutely defenseless for several hours while they are hardening after their molt but if its big enough then the oscars may not even bother it, i guess you wont know unless you try but from my experience and from what i have read online the general consensus is that these guys cant really be kept with cichlids but this species may be different i dont know

there is always the chance the oscar will try to eat it...even if they're close to the same size the oscar could go after the lobster's legs or claws....there's always a chance it could work but chances are one is going to be trying to go after the other.

A guy i know did it for a while the bule lobster would hid for the most part till it was about 12" then it would just own the tank. it decided to eat a full gown texas cichlid one day then got a hold of a 26" catfish that it filetted one side of before he found it.

Just curious if you made the purchase. If so, how did it work out for you? I was looking at the same website for the same lobster for my tank with a Midas. My midas is pretty laid back and tolerate my other fish. (Danio's, pleco and Bala sharks) I'm curious of the growth rate of these blue knight lobsters. Anybody know?

I would not mix crustaceans with cichlids that are bigger or near the same size, it generally will not work out well for your crayfish
