Any one figgered out the cause or cure for Drop Eye yet?

So, you think that is they were kept in an open top tank, with a net up to high for them to hit yet still being able to keep them in the tank, they might not develop drop eye? Like one of those indoor kiddy pools?

What about diet? Feeding high protien, meaty foods might prevent it? Or visa versa?

I wish I could try the indoor pool. Would love to setup a 15' x 3' pool, with some small branches above the water about 12" and release crickets onto the branches. Would like to also add some lily pads with frogs. Run this type setup with a few silver aros and see the results.

So sorry I was dreaming there, but yes I think raisng in a large indoor pond could help.

to be honest i dont think theres any way around it,short of leaving silvers in the wild. assuming that silvers are easily farm breed, like asians, which also get drop eye, brings me to the coclusion that these things breed like rabbits and only the few that dont get DE survive in the wild.perhaps thats why blacks are less plentifull, they dont get DE so theres no reason for huge #s to be breed in the wild, and when placed in captivity they would be much harder to breed. its even hard to try and find pics of large silvers being caught on hook and reel, unlike pbass or even armatus etc..,so their #'s must not be plentifull. just a thought.

may aswell give up trying to find the cause of drop eye even if you got the right answer no one would belive you

if you dont like drop eye dont buy a silver buy a black its as simple as that

that said i still think that its caused by aros being kept in clear water

in the wild the water would be cloudy so the only place to look would be up Black aro jars and asian aros may come from clearer waters than silver aro

get a silver aro get drop eye thats the way it is :D

Well, if what you say is right then I should try keeping a Silver Arowana. I have TONS of tannins in my 300gal tank from all the driftwood and the like (tank is constantly brown, even after waterchanges). If that doesn't simulate the blackwater, then I don't know what will.

i always feed my black arowana from my hand and make him jump up for it.He seems to always be looking up for my hand with a shrimp attached.Maybe this type of feeding helps strengthen its eye mussels?

i by no means think we will find the cause or cure for DE in this thread, but its been a very nice civilized discussion so far. who knows maybe someone will find the answer one day, i mean we,d have no electricity if some crazy guy never tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm.(proboably not a perfect example or the way it happened but you get my point)

I also thought , maybe a mirror on top of the tank might work??

i think if an aro saw another aro constantly following him or coming closer to him the closer he got to him that it would cause alot of skittishness and even more collisions.

ahhhhh, the good ol DE threads.

everyone covered everything im thinking about. i guess i only popped in to say, don't let DE stop you from owning a beautiful arowana. it really isn't that bad looking and you learn to love him. its kinda like having a baby, then watching him turn into a fat kid lol. you still love him regardless. my friends throw out the occassional bagging for having a aro with DE but who cares. its your tank, your fish. enjoy it!
