I dis liked keeping crappie, def. do not keep them with other aggressive fish. They are vary hard to pellet train. I have gotten them to eat unfrozen shrimp and dead minnows. Best of luck

thaks for the info the tank i have them in has no heater. ive kept sunfish befor i havnt got them on pelets yet but they love frozen food. i ahve done some resurch on breeding habits and they spawn late spring to early summer at 65 deg might try to recreate this and see if i cant get a spawn i havnt found how to distinguish between male and femail but i think the males are darker in color. they are black crappie.ive got a pic i will post on here.

i had one once and loved him but mine wouldnt take pellets no matter what...

When they are spawning (they are just getting ready to spawn at several places here) the male crappie will be much darker than the females. The females are usually bigger than the males also.

Black crappies spawn in water way colder then that. They move to spawning areas the week the ice comes of the lakes, up here. I could see bluegills spawning at 65 but crappies will be before that.

Here they are starting to spawn, and the temp is probably around 60 degrees.
