Any tankmates for piranhas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had RB's in with an Exodon for over a month now and they have not even touched him. I had some small tetras with them when I first got the RB's and they were gone the first night. But the bucktooth just seems to fit in with them, he is just as agressive towards the food as the RB's and will often fight them for food. I do keep mine well fed (3 times a day) so that could be the key to keeping them together.

my pleco lived for about 2 weeks then one day I found half of its body on a piece of driftwood, my 4" rhom got hungry at night :)

pleco or other p's thats about it, they wont nip much if they are well fed

yeah I mean plecos fare better than other fish, but you can't keep a nice one. Expect it to be missing a tail, a dorsal fin, anything the piranha can get his teeth into. It's not exactly fair to the pleco.

I'm not to familiar with these guys so correct me if I'm wrong guys don't jags/dovii have nice sized teeth and an attitude problem? Might get to large for a 75 though I think they both get like 15ins?

well yeah they would get too big for a 75 especially with a RBP in there, and yes in the wild guapotes eat RBP's, but in a tank it's either going to be a battle to the death, or your RBP biting off a fin here, some scales there, and a tail every time it grows back. Once again not fair to the cichlid. They're parasites. There's just no getting around it.

I feed my marginatus tetras and cichlids. I gave him some convicts to eat one time and he pardoned one after biting off it's fins and tails.. That convict lived in the tank without a tail like his little homie for about a month. Then one day I came home and it was just the front part of his head with theeyes and lips missing. I thought it was a piece of shrimp at first, then I noticed the con was missing. They're piranhas, don't expect them to place nice. If you want tankmates get rid of the RBP and keep another kind of fish.

agree, same thing happened to one of the convict in my rhom tank.

I have had two pirahnas who have lived peacefully together for over a year now, they are about 5inch's. Sharing the tank with them I have about 8 small fish (neon's, guppies and a few others), three chery shrimp, small snails, a fresh water clam and a tiny type of cat fish (about a 2cm long) and they have all lived with each other in harmony for about 7 months now. I think my pirahnas are way more relaxed than normal red bellys. One of them lets me pet it! My pirahnas dont feed on any thing that is to small to bother to catch, even smaller feeder fish have lasted in my tank for months.

I know my pirahnas are very good with tank mates but my bet is that it depends on your pirahnas individual persinality

well i have a shoal of 6 rbp and they are very peaceful towards the 7 inch severum and the 4 inch con in there..

the sev lost a bit of its tail the first day it got put in.. and the con lost a part of his gill.. but after the first day.. they haven't touched either fish.. the sev even shoals with the Ps now.. he got up to a point where he was nipping at the Ps so i had to take him out.. no way im gonna let a retarded sev mess up my Ps.. :D lol

con is still doing well..

ive had plecos with my Ps since they were nickel size.. never any problems..

everything will eventually end up food. there is no exception. it is impossible to keep a piranha with tank mates in a long term situation, even schools will eventually be destroyed.
